I only have a few of these, and in general am very fond of almost everything I hear from Giulini. A no-brainer for me, expecially for a reasonable price.

I know Warner has a few boxes of the EMI recordings, but those boxes hardly represent his EMI legacy.

Thanks Sony.

this is very late and very slow Giulini

Late they are. In the last years of his life.

But not just slow; you do them an injustice, Herman.

They are slow the way late Arrau or late Bruno Walter are slow: deeply felt.

I must say that I was waiting for the other shoe to drop and here it is, this time from Sony. Warners(alias EMI) and DG beat Sony to the punch, however, for whatever that is worth.

I am only glad that Giulini has not been forgotten completely and that his anniversary is being celebrated at all by anyone. I shall never forget the magic of his LAPhil performances at Carnegie Hall. Very special, indeed.

They are, mostly, and maybe not always as compelling as come of his earlier recordings, e.g. the Beethoven symphonies with the Scala orchestra don't have quite the drive and energy of his earlier recordings with the LAP (3,5,6). They are more laid back and lyrical. But still musically very worthwhile.

Never heard his later Pictures; I wonder if his late, weighty manner adds anything to the piece. It's not like there is a lot of "depth" to be gained there.
Never heard the LSO Beethoven symphonies either. He also recorded the 6th in LA, which is a favorite 6th of mine.

[details snipped]

One of the three Warner boxes seems to currently be at a significant
discount at Amazon: "The London Years", 17 CD's for about $34. [The
Chicago and Concerto sets are not at this discount.] The contents are
easily visible at http://www.prestoclassical.co.uk/r/Warner%2BClassics/9937392

This set has been mentioned here before. But I'm unclear what the
vintage is, for example, as compared to the Sony set. Any simple
way to characterize this? (I gather it's mostly with the Philharmonia.)

Actually, DG has released two major boxes of Giulini's American recordings, one set with the complete LA Phil sessions (excepting such items as the Chopin Piano Concertos with Zimerman, a collection of arias with Placido Domingo, and Verdi's Falstaff), and another with the complete Chicago Symphony issues. These were issued in 2010 (LA) and 2011 (Chicago). Nothing more recently, as far as I know.
