Nice piece, but oh, if only his Violin Concertino were available. It was
recorded by Oistrakh and was issued on a Melodiya LP.

Apparently, however, your very favorite Georgian composer has yet to
write anything substantial for this combination (as he has for Viola &
Orch and Cello & Orch), - or am I missing something?

I'm familiar with Taktakishvili's Concerto, but I prefer the Concertino,
and not merely because it has Oistrakh playing (but it doesn't hurt).
Eric,
Check the "Swedish Violin Concertos" thread (which needs updating -
how does one post to an old topic?) in the archives, where I've seen
fit to include the Tubin pieces (because of his extended residence).
But you're right, of course, that they could just as plausibly be
considered "Estonian" and placed here.
The Tamberg Concertos CD appears NLA based on a first level search of
my usual sources. Do you have any information otherwise?
Jan Raats (both a's umlauted) : Concerto for Vln & Cha. Orch.
(Melodiya LP)
Osvaldas Balakauskas : Concerto Brio (F. Vln & Cha. Orch: / BIS)
Peteris Vasks - Violin Concerto (for Vln & strings.. Ondine? I only
have it in a live recording..)
(The latter two are post soviet concertos)

No, indeed seems to be not available in the US. Still, it was released on
CD at one point apparently and might be available somewhere.
I'd missed the earlier thread, unfortunately (but then, I was largely on
hiatus from this forum for some time!)

Actually, the Tamberg symphonies/violin concerto CD is still offered at
JPC (do they ship to the US now? Last I heard, no.)
I haven't seen the 2nd Khrennikov on CD either.
The 2nd Raats violin concerto (for violin and chamber orchestra, op. 63,
from 1979) is on Antes BMCD 31.9065 (CD released 1996.) Jewgeni Schuk,
violin, soloists of the Moscow State Philharmonic Orchestra, Valentin
Schuk conducting.

I suspect that he did it him self, but who knows a bussy man like him
might have his own "santas little helper" stached away..
Uh, I mean Giya Kancheli, Scott, - about whose music MT has expressed
somewhat less than stellar enthusiasm for over the years.
And indeed they've been listed by them- the Raats in the July 1998 and the
Tamberg as a special import in the April 1998 catalogs. (I don't know if
they still offer them.) The April 1999 Records International catalog
mentions a Antes CD of Heino Eller's violin concerto (1933/64, Viktor
Pikaizen, vn., Estonian Radio Symphony, two conductors listed for the CD-
Antes BMCD 31.9123) as well. Thanks for the reminder.

Who has written a violin concerto, "Lamentation," in 1993.
http://www.siue.edu/~aho/musov/kancheli/kanchelichron.html
Unrecorded, I believe.
Talivaldis Kenins, now residing in Canada, wrote a (possibly recorded? CMC
Centrediscs has released a few recordings of his music, though not many-
one compilation with a symphony and other works, one of chamber music,
perhaps others)- violin and piano double concerto in 1987. There is also a
violin concerto (1974), which -is- recorded in that first compilation.
There is a Dvarionas elegy for violin and strings recorded on a 1997
Teldec CD of Baltic violin works with Gidon Kremer ("From My Home", some
with orchestral accompaniment, some solo, some with piano accompaniment,
one- Vasks' Musica Dolorosa- for string orchestra.)

In fact, towerrecords.com lists both the Tamberg and Raats Antes CD's
as in stock. I've ordered, - but without knowing anything of the
style and quality of their concertos. Have you looked at scores or
heard these?
Is one of these two recordings the one that appeared on Urania LP back in
the 1950s? (Gavrilov/Sym Orch Radio Berlin/Rother?) (Ok, the Olympia is
Hardy/S.O. Russia/Dudarova and recorded 1995, so the other?)

His chamber symphony once on LP has a part for solo violin,
apparently. (The violin concerto was recorded previously in the 1960s,
making the Campion its CD premiere, but I haven't heard either recording
yet.)

Not yet on CD, I believe: Nikolai Peiko's concert-fantasy for violin and
orchestra (recorded on LP by Tretiakov in piano arrangement, with the
composer at the piano.)
Boris Chaikovskii's concerto (recorded around 1975 by Victor Pikaizen,
Moscow Philh, Kondrashin.)
Shaverzashvili's concerto (Melodiya LP, with Tsintsadze's piano concerto.
Piano concerti might be a longer list, I have a feeling. Historical
reasons for that?)
Not yet recorded prob.: German Galynin, aria for violin and strings. (One
of his piano concerti and some of his other works have some minor
currency.)
Tsintsadze's violin concerto (pub. Muzyka vn/pno arr. 1971.)

Ivanovs violin concerto finds the composer in "popular" mode, rather like
the roughly contemporaneous Kabalevsky concerto Op.48, (and his Opp. 49 and
50).
IIRC, both Melodiya Lp recordings are good - the later one being not a great
advance in terms of sonics. The Campion CD should, of course, be cleaner
than either!

I am probably a victim of Alzheimer but wasn't there a popular composer
by that name who composed a lot of film music and other pop in 1970-80s?
