This is the 3rd posting of my list of historical Bruckner recordings
and I have the feeling that this one won't need too many corrections,
although it certainly still needs some additions.

I wish to thank everyone who helped me putting it up and I apologize in
advance to those who might get into financial difficulties after reading
it.

As usual, corrections and additions are welcome.

And BTW, does anyone know how to get that 1924 recording of the 7th by
Oskar Fried ?

Lionel Tacchini.

I know somebody who has access to a copy. I'll let you have his

Lionel, I may have missed this earlier, but I'm curiouis as to how you
established the dates for these, given the toal absence of factual
information in the Dante/Lys set and theeir claim that the records had
been destroyed and that even Jochum couldn't remember when the

In his review Richard Osborne gave the dates listed above,
Gramophone July 1993, p. 96.
The notes in the DanTe Lys CD were wildly entertained and quite
fictional, methinks.

Lionel, thanks for all of your efforts. There are a few posts you must
have missed, and these result in some slight modifications to your list:

1) You can delete the entry for Karajan's 1944 Eighth with the Berlin
Staatsoper (Finale only). Bruce Morrison tells us that this is the same
as the performance with the Prussian Staatskapelle according to John
Hunt's discography.

2) You can also delete the entry for the Steinberg Seventh, which was
recorded in 1968 according to Mark Kluge.

3) Add an entry for the van Beinem/Concertgebouw Fifth, recorded live on
9, 11, or 12 March 1959. Bruce Morrison remembered this recording, and
Mark Kluge provided the date.

Now for some questions of my own:

1) The first two entries for van Beinum are both recordings of the Seventh
with the Concertgebouw Orchestra for Decca. They are dated 10 September
1947 and May 1953. Are the dates correct? Are these really distinct
recordings? It seems strange that Decca would make two recordings of
the Seventh by the same conductor and orchestra in such a short time span.

2) Regarding Andreae's recordings of Symphonies 1-3 with the Vienna
Symphony Orchestra: Bruce Morrison (and Robert Cowan on page 33 of the
June 1996 Gramophone) said these were originally released on the Amadeo
label. Are the Philips releases mentioned above reissues of the Amadeo
recordings, or are they different recordings?

3) Also, in addition to the 1953 Andreae/Vienna Symphony Orchestra
recording of the First, there is a listing for a 1950 Andreae/
Niederoesterreich Tonkuenstler Orchester recording of the First. When
Mark Kluge first mentioned the latter in a post a few weeks back, he had
a date of *circa* 1950 (which could include 1953). Also, I believe the
Niederoesterreich Tonkuenstler Orchester was somehow absorbed by the
Vienna Symphony Orchestra somewhere around that time. So my question is:
Are these two recordings truly distinct, or are they different releases of
the same performance?

I got the information from Mike Gray who sent me many other corrections.
Mike, did you get this from the same Gramophone article mentioned by
Mr. Korvstedt ?

They did make two, the first on 78s, and the later one on tape. This was
not uncommon at the time - Ansermet Petrushka, Barbirolli Intro & Allegro,
etc., etc. AFAIK, the 78 recording has never been reissued.

They are the same recordings.

Dave, these are indeed different. The Tonkuenstler recording used the
first published edition (Vienna version), while the VSO recording used the
Linz version of the score. You may be thinking of the original
Tonkuenstler Orchestra, which merged with the VSO after WWI. The later
Tonkuenstler Orchestra originally formed in the 1930s as the "NS
Betriebsorganisation Orchestra," and later became the NS Tonkuenstler
Orchester. After the war, the orchestra shed its unfortunate political
association and made numerous recordings for Remington/Masterseal "c.
1950." (Sorry, I simply don't have a more exact date. The Masterseal
Bruckner First was first reviewed in February 1952. The Fritz Busch
recordings with the Tonkuenstler on Masterseal are known to be recorded in
1950.)

I'm fairly certain that Eugen Jochum only made one recording of the Fourth
in the 1950s, and the May 1954 date is the correct one. (Can someone
please verify?) Speaking of Jochums, Georg Ludwig Jochum's recording of
the Third (part of the Tahra set) hasn't yet made it onto the list.
