Leonidas Kavakos signs to Decca

Wed 25th April 2012

Leonidas Kavakos signs to Decca (photo: Decca/Daniel Regan)

Leonidas Kavakos, the Greek violinist, has signed to Decca. His first
recording for the label will be a complete set of the Beethoven
sonatas, with pianist Enrico Pace, while later releases will include
the Brahms Violin Concerto (conducted by Riccardo Chailly) and the
complete solo violin music of Bach.

Thanks! The Beethoven sonatas are being recorded this period in the Athens Concert Hall (that has a quite advanced recording studio: Ashkenazy recorded there Tchaikovksy's Seasons for Decca etc.). Kavakos gave in concert the sonatas in Athens this month and he will repeat them in Salzburg in the summer.

Interesting signing by Pilavachi.

He must have gotten tired of waiting for Sony to record him and
promote him. His Mendelssohn (concerto and piano trio #1) and Mozart
are excellent, but they were virtually invisible to US buyers.

I look forward to all of his recordings.

Sony issued his Mendelssohn CD in August 2009, but then followed it in

profile artists. He has a reason to be unhappy with them.

Just based on the one CD of his that I have (Sibelius VC in both the
standard edition and the "original" one), I'd say he's excellent. Whether
I want further recordings of very standard repertoire, I couldn't say.

Me too.

Last month he made his debut on the podium of the Boston Symphony! These days he performs Korngold's VC with Dudamel and the BPO in Berlin.

Because the label is run by beancounters who will be honestly surprised when
sales fail to meet expectations?

I imagine they have an advanced recording control room, and not studio (?)

Shouldn't need much to record Beethoven Sonatas. A laptop, Pro Tools,
a good Firewire interface (Avid, Apogee or RME) , plus
mics/cables/stands/hard drives.

I looked at the Mendelssohn CD on Amazon and it says I purchased it on
5/14/2010. Have no memory of listening to it. Probably bought it based
on raves here.

You just told us Kavrakos is "excellent" from the CD you have. You
don't feel he should record the Beethoven Sonatas? Are accountants
really making A&R decisions at Decca?

I assume you are right. However, the recording was made in the smaller 500-sear "Mitropoulos" Hall of the Megaron complex and not in the 2000-seat main hall.

I don't know about that, Matthew. SOP seems to be giving a new
violinist a debut disc of small bon-bons or maybe a concerto, followed
immediately by what you call Krossover Krap to assuage the masses.
Decca is the home of Joshua Bell, after all. Launching a new signing
with the complete Beethoven Sonatas seems to me to be making a
commitment to a serious artist with serious repertoire by a serious
label.

As far as LK recording unusual rep...well, he's already done that with
the recording of the Sibelius (first version). It's time for this damn
fine fiddler to put down some of the standard rep for posterity. I'm
encourage Decca is taking this tact with him.

I saw him perform several times at Verbier last summer. He's a real
musician and he's as good as any violinist out there right now. I was
having a conversation recently with a semi-professional violinist and
I asked her who she thought was the best violinist currently before
the public. She thought for a while and chose Kavakos.

I was surprised and impressed by this signing. He's in his 40's and
he's not the next new young phenom. He's not very photogenic – he's
very tall and has an unkempt Lupu-like beard. I left Verbier intent
on seeking out more of his recordings. I already had his Sibelius
from about 20 years ago. I was disappointed that there were not that
many other choices, though there's a very nice video of him perform
the Beethoven Violin Concerto (Mehta conducting) on the Berlin
Philharmonic's Digital Concert Hall subscription service. I'm glad to
hear that he's going to be recording regularly. I only hope that
Decca remains consistent in its commitment to him.

I'm not sure I'd dismiss a musician completely out-of-hand based on
one performance he gave 24 years ago when he was barely out of his
teens. Give him another try or two and see what you think. If you're
opinion remains unchanged, I'd be curious to know which currently-
performing violinist you find to be unquestionably superior.

http://tiny.cc/kfkfdw Bell's latest release of Saint-Saëns, Franck,

The two recital discs on ECM are superb--you should definitely get

Kavakos is consistently one of the best violinists out there right

A quick check at amazon shows that Bell broke in as a Decca artist
back in 1990 or so with his recordings of the Mendelssohn and Bruch 1,
followed by an album of shorter pieces. His recordings for Sony seem
to date to 1999 (The Red Violin), ie: 13 years ago, not "over 15 years
ago.".

Don't forget that I am fond of John Corigliano's music, and Bell made the

To skewer my own thesis, I seem to remember that, after they had been out

prices from collectors, at a time when he was recording mostly krossover
krap for Sony. (The Decca recordings were later reissued, of course.)

Indeed; but now that he's signed to Decca, I'd like to see them record him in

If completion is the goal--I don't know if anyone mentioned the
Schumann sonatas, on Sony. I can't remember it, off-hand. Who was the
pianist? (One of his recent recitals on the radio included one of the
Schumann sonatas, with Leonskaya accompanying.) Plus, one of his many
performances of the Dutilleux concerto is preserved in a four disc box
of Gergiev Festival recordings from Rotterdam.

Anyway, I'm already getting a fairly steady diet of Kavakos thanks to
the radio (concerti by Szymanowski, Berg, Dutilleux, Brahms, Sibelius,
Mendelssohn, etc.), but not enough chamber music. Given how good
Kavakos is in that setting. I'll be eager to hear the Beethoven set.

I just bought that CD after a concert this week so I could get him to
sign it. Will play it later on.

He was with the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields at the Valley
Performing Arts Center at Cal State Northridge. Very spirited
performance of Beethoven's 7th, could have used a little more
poignancy and reflection in the slow movement I felt. He did a great
job with the Beethoven Violin Concerto, but I don't think it will
stand out as the best I've heard. He led the orchestral works from the
first chair of the violins. Actually a piano bench (seemed to raise
him up a little and allow him to move very fluidly so all members
could see him. I sometimes felt he stuck out a little amongst the rest
of his section. (If people don't know he is the new Director of the
ASMF, with Murray Perahia as Guest Conductor).

Nice hall, had never been there before. Sat in the 3rd row. About a
week ago it was virtually sold out, the morning of the concert most of
the first 4 rows opened up. (Those rows seem to be removable if a
larger stage is required)

Of course instant standing ovation after each work and applause after
the first movements of the concerto & symphony). (In February I
attended 5 classical concerts and not a single unanimous standing
ovation at any concert - including Joshua Bell with the LPO).

There are *two* Szymanowski violin concertos, both much recorded but
seldom appear in concert. I like best Wanda Wilkomirska on an old
Polskie Nagrania Lp. Here she is on youtube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jFP85o5Q-g8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=en506J_ebnQ

Modern recordings: Rattle/Thomas Zehetmair; Dutoit/Juillet; Vassily
Sinaisky/Lydia Mordkovitch; even old Boulez has unbent to conduct
Szymanowski with Tetzlaff as soloist.

Now onwards and upwards to the Stabet Mater, Symphony No. 3 (Song of
the Night) and the opera King Roger.

I do not think the Schumann sonatas CD has been issued. It appears all over us unavailable with a Jan 12 release date.

Wilkomirska's recording was also re-released on CD, but I'm not sure
if it is easy to find at a reasonable price at the moment.

You might do the same for Pollini, as you haven't heard a note of him
for about 50 years. Ditto Alfred Brendel, but there it's too late; he
has retired.

What a schlemiel!

I'll add Kyung-Wha Chung and Rachel Barton Pine. In fact, if you love the
Beethoven VC as much as I do, get Barton Pine's recording, which is coupled
with a concerto by its dedicatee, Franz Clement. Listening to that work,
you hear the impression (or at least I did) that Beethoven wrote his in
response, using many of the gestures and in some case with similar tunes,
but of course in his own stupendously superior manner, as if to say, "No,
Franz, you should have done it THIS way! And like this, and that...."

I have done that........ heard a live recital from Paris, very clean
but dull playing.
