Sadly, little has changed since this invaluable 2011 commentary on Ataulfo Argenta’s recorded work.

I was quite disappointed in a recent 2-CD survey by the Spanish division of Sony (presumably heir to the old Spanish Columbia/Alhambra/BMG catalog) entitled “Lo Mejor de la Musica Espanola dirigida por ATAULFO ARGENTA.” There is absolutely no documentation inside the Digibox package. Track 5 of Disc 2 is labelled as an orchestral Nocturne from one of the zarzuelas but is actually quite something else (a singer with orchestra, possibly a cut from other part of the zarzuela). This is one release that can easily be avoided. Buyer beware.
It’s a shame, since Sony still has the opportunity to provide an international release for the real stereo recordings of non-zarzuela* Spanish repertoire made by the Decca/London team in the 50s heretofore available only on hard-to-find Spanish CDs. Universal has done better with its 5-CD clamshell box of the Decca recordings, though they did not include all the Parisian Musidisc recordings that I believe are now part of the Universal library.

*PS - I'm assuming here that the mountain of zarzuela recordings just
won't have any appeal outside of Spain, though some of the orchestral
preludes could find a broader audience.
