Wherever I negotiate a path through this ng I keep bumping into
recommendations for Zhukov - Chopin preludes, Scriabin Sonatas etc. I'm
willing to take it on faith from you guys that my total lack of his discs is
an omission i should correct, so over to you for recommended discs, labels
ect. Andy

So far I've only come up with two CDs, a disc on MK recorded in Japan in
1972 containing Tchaikovsky's Seasons and some Scriabin, and (this should
be easier to find) the disc devoted to him in the Melodiya/BMG Russian
Piano School series.

I have a CD of him performing the Medtner 1st Concerto, the
Rimsky-Korsakov concerto, and the Balakirev 1st concerto. The Medtner
in particular is quite enjoyable and intense throughout. All the
performances are Soviet era performances from 25-30 years ago. The
catalog # is MK 417087. The MK stands for Mezhdunarodnaya Kniga. I
purchased it from Beshire several months ago and don't know if it's
available still.

The Chopin preludes, coupled to Skrjabin's preludes op. 11 (recorded in 1983
and 1979) can be found on Melodia.

Wait for peter lemken to step in but meanwhile ...

- tchaikovsky piano concertos on BMG/Melodya inc. a complete 2nd pc which knocks
all competition sideways and is on my list of 10 greatest ever concerto
recordings

I have 3 melodya LPs of Zhukov's Scriabin sonatas, preludes etc. Alas this these
are NOt out on CD. They should be. Zhukov is surely the finest Scriabinst alive
and I'd guess the true air to Sofronitsky. if you ever see them, even if in
awful condition just buy !

Boris Zindells can usually find them and mail them to you. I have his email
address if you need it.

- Melodya great pianists series. Disc includes Bach/Zhukov (stupendous
performance of C minor passaglia), a heavenly Waldzenen, Prokofiev, gorgeous
Tchaikovsky and so on. Its a disc to treasure. BUY !

Interesting, I didn't know Zhukov played the harpsichord. I just got a LP rip of Zhukov and the Feigins playing the first three Rameau concerti (pieces de clavecin en concerts). I'll try to get the other two to upload all 5.

Peter, in which year was the Liszt Sonata recorded? Was it released on a LP? Does anyone know? It's a live recording from which year?

Also did Zhukov record Chopin's first ballade?

The Liszt sonata is from 192. It is a 'private' studio recording from the
Munich Herkulessaal and has never been commercially released.

Yes, he played the 1st and 4th Chopin Ballade in recital many times.

Thanks. There's a live recording here which is attributed to him. Any idea if this is Zhukov? http://classic-online.ru/ru/listen/26188

I'm not sure the discographical data here was complete even in 1999. Either way, a lot has happened since. Several releases on Telos, including new recordings of the complete Scriabin sonatas, a disc with the Brahms third sonata, and one with Beethoven's Op 110, the Medtner quintet, and the Medtner Op 22 sonata.

The Brahms PC2 appeared in a box with 25 CDs by various Russian pianists. The Melodiya Scriabin sonatas came out on CD.

Recordings of the first and fourth Chopin Ballades, captured somehow, were posted by, I think, Panovnik. The first is uploaded here:

http://www.mediafire.com/download/3xlo06qlqhbi1i5/ZhukovBallade1.flac

And there's a Melodiya LP that also appeared in the West with Z and the Feigens in Arensky's trio #1 and the Glinka Trio pathetique.

Thanks Steve. That is the same recording as on the Russian site I linked to, though yours sounds like better quality.

In addition to the recordings you mentioned, I found out yesterday that Telos have added to their Zhukov Edition -- one CD of works he conducts, and another of three concertos that he plays and conducts (Shostakovich, Mozart and Bach). There's a review of the latter here:

http://www.classical.net/music/recs/reviews/t/tls00175a.php

If anyone knows the dates of those Chopin Ballades 1 & 4, please let me know.

I listened this am to a .flac file on my computer, provenance of which I no longer recall, nor wrote down sadly, of a Zhukov performance , possibly live (?) , of the Schumann Op.17 Fantasy .

Anyone here have any details ? Was this performance ever commercially available ? TIA . May have been paired with the Chopin 3rd Sonata by Zhukov as I also have that.

I'm sure it's Zhukov, just not sure when, where.

For my taste, a great reading, but each to his own .

PS - I have multiple copies of a Zhukov LP sometimes issued as "Four
Russian Rarities for Piano and Orchestra." Rimsky's Concerto Op 30,
Scriabin Fantasia in a minor (orch. by G. Zinger), Tchaikovsky PC 3 in E
flat Op 75 Allegro brillante, and the tiny Tchaik. Allegro in c minor.
Most of it conducted by Rozhdestvensky. I will happily send to anyone
interested for the few dollars in shipping cost.
