Serious question. Not trolling. I find her tone unattractive and her interpretations, for the most part, uninviting and rather boring. Not entertaining. I am sure there are some recordings that are better than others. But is this an artist with a fan base? She has been harmonia mundi's prize stable violinist for over a decade now. I'll take Julia Fischer, or especially PatKop, any day.

Here’s how to find out. Go on Amazon, find some of her recordings, and read the customer reviews. Then find her on YouTube and read the comments below.

Perhaps he wanted to know what his RMCR colleagues thought, surely a
more knowledgeable bunch than Amazon and YouTue reviewers.

I like her playing ... but ... I'd describe her style as "reticent" and a bit cold. I have her set of the Beethoven sonatas with Melnikov and was a bit disappointed. Not disappointed enough to ditch the set. I'll listen to it again later, I think. Maybe I need to be more in the mood. Fischer, Kremer and others like them are more extrovert and that too is appealing. Faust's style has its own appeal, I think. Don't know if I'm making any sense. I'll shut up now.

I have recordings of her Janacek Violin Sonata and Martinu VC # 2, and enjoy her playing in each case.

I agree with MIFrost that she doesn't openly convey the warmth of Fischer or Jansen, but imo she is a powerful and probing artist, miles ahead of the showboating and (to me) uninteresting Kopachinskaja. Try Faust's Schubert Fantasy with Melnikov (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDgpe6SIjCw), which I find fascinating and distinctive. (My wife doesn't like it.) Or her Dvořák coupling of the Violin Concerto with the F-minor Piano Trio (the latter with superb partners in Melnikov and Queyras). Uninviting and boring? Not to me! Obviously tastes differ.

Ooh! I fell in love with Kopatchinskaja's recording of the Tchaikovsky VC. Showboating, yes, but what showboating that is! Mesmerizing to my ears. A one-of-a-kind performance.

I saw her last year in the Beethoven Concerto with the Cleveland Orchestra under Herreweghe. It was a beautiful performance in every way. I also like her recording of the Berg concerto with Abbado.

My recommendation for looking at Amazon customer reviews and YouTube comments was specifically to address the question of whether or not she has a fan base.

I looked and found that she most definitely does!

Her recent recording of the Schoenberg Violin Concerto was excellent. Can't say I'm a "fan" of hers generally speaking, but her best recordings certainly are praiseworthy.

But Kopatchinskaja is not for me. Impressive technique, but her calculated, self-conscious "quirkiness" doesn't really appeal to me. Heard her last year at Disney Hall performing the Tchaikovsky. It was like ol' Pyotr had donned black nail polish and hair dye and gone full-on emo. Never heard anything like that, for sure, but at least for me personally it didn't work.

The recording of the Horn Trio with van der Swart (natural horn) and
Melnikov on Harmonia is excellent.

Thank you, Frank. Seeking to know from those of us herein, whose judgements I can handicap based on past experience. Just because I disagree with someone does not mean I do not value "their" opinion.

I agree. Thanks! The Schubert with Melnikov was my introduction to her playing. I own a number of her recordings. I thinkk she's a fine artist. De gustibus . . .
