He's not up with Kubelik and Kertesz, but he conducts with great zest
and I think he has a hankering to be a flautist -- there's a bit of
spotlighting of the winds which adds to the general bravura of the
performance. Enjoyable indeed.

Batiz's Rodrigo collection on EMI is essential; I also greatly
enjoy his two Bizet discs on ASV.

Borodin:Symphony 2, Prince Igor Overture and Polovtsian
Dances on ASV QS 6016.
Rodrigo:The Rodrigo Edition on 4-EMI 67435 (bargain
priced).
Admiration for Batiz is not universal, but I enjoy
the above.

He is usually fine with Spanish and Latin American music, so check out his
series on ASV, particularly the Chavez symphonies (although first mention
there would go to Mata on Vox) and works by Revueltas and Ponce. His Rodrigo
recordings on EMI are excellent, a compliment that does not extend to the
music itself. On the non-Latino front his approach is often straight to a
fault, but you may checkout his Naxos discs of Respighi (Rome tone poems) and
Rimsky-Korsakov (Sheherazade), which are above-average. He made countless
recordings in the early days of digital, most of which have since
disappeared.

Speaking of Chavez and Revueltas (Sinfonia India and Sensemaya).
Apologies for veering OT from Batiz.
MTT and what is called the New World Symphony do these works on an Eloquence
CD titled Latin American Classics, and which, I have discovered, is NOT on
Australian Eloquence. DRAT.

DH drooled over it. Anyone heard it? I'd like a copy, and we have heaps of
Mehta/LAPO over here to tempt you <g>
DH even gave Ten Twinkies and a Devil Dog chaser to all concerned.
