An excellent issue, which I've just reviewed for 'zarzuela.net' - the
Bretn String Quartet's pungent, characterful playing, plus immediate
and detailed sound, make the new CD clear top choice for this beautiful
pair of quartets.

The slow movement of the 2nd quartet (A minor, 1949) is heart-rendingly
beautiful, and one of this Basque composer's most inspired creations. I
can only compare its impact to Tchaikovsky's, in the slow movements of
his SQ's.

Highly recommended.

Thanks, Christopher. I enjoy Guridi's orchestral music but found the Naxos
disc of piano works a complete bore. I'll definitely give the quartets a
listen, and also wonder which one of the available zarzuela recordings you
would recommend to a neophyte in the genre.

The Naxos "El Casero" is very good, and complete: but if you can get
hold of either of the two earlier CD issues (from LP, under Torroba and
Argenta) they are more exciting, and often better sung.

There's a tiny pop-out "recommendation" page here:
http://www.zarzuela.net/cd/cdmag/rec/rr050.htm

... which oddly doesn't include the Naxos (time for the Madrid Editor to
update!)
that is reviewed at length here:
http://www.zarzuela.net/cd/cdmag/cdmag073.htm

"El casero" is the only Guridi zarzuela substantially available, sad to
say. The opera "Amaya" is a disappointment in a lot of respects - Andrew
Lamb thought more of it than I did, though, as you can read:

Thank you for the link, Gerard - I forgot to include it.
