I've been thinking of purchasing the 13-volume Sibelius Edition on
BIS.

Does anyone know if the complete edition is available in some sort of
slipcase that houses all 13 volumes (hopefully at a discount), or is
it sold only as the 13 volumes without a slipcase?

If there's a slipcase, I'd probably like to own it. If it's only
available without a slipcase, then I'd probably opt to spread out the
purchase over a couple of months.

Any info is appreciated.

I bought Vols. 3 & 8 from MDT a couple of months ago after being
alerted to the completion of the Complete Edition in this group. They
come in cardboard boxes with paper sleeves and a fairly thick booklet.
I paid about $93 for them including shipping to the US. MDT has since
bumped up their price and the cheapest UK source now appears to be
Presto. MDT displays a complete edition for $645.

http://www.mdt.co.uk/MDTSite/product//BISSIBELIUS.htm

I can't make out if the boxes have just been lined up in a row or if
they have been packed into a cardboard sleeve. Anyway, the whole thing
would be a bitch to ship and probably arrive torn. I think the best
bet is to be selective and pick up individual boxes as they go on sale
-- I just ordered Vol.2 for $39.12 from Amazon US (unfortunately the
last one in stock), you may get some vols. from Amazon-associated
resellers in the mid $40's.

Mark,

I have never heard of a slipcase of the entire set... nor a discount.

http://www.bis.se/bis_pages/bis_sibelius-edition.php

[I bought them all individually 1-2 volumes at a time]

BIS seems to have a policy of (eventually) making expensive recordings
available at a budget price. For example, the Bach cantata series is being
issued as budget boxes. The Vanska Beethoven Symphony cycle is available for
the price of about two disks.

I've decided to wait and see what happens.

I just checked, and Arkiv has no stock of any of the first four albums. As
BIS has just reached #50, one can assume a limited-edition boxed set will
show up in a few months.

Kirk -

You might want to consider this set:

I had an e-mail from BIS this morning. There is no slipcase and there
are no plans to produce one.

But frankly, I don't think I want to spend the time listening to that
much Sibelius. So, for me, no dice.

Yes. That looks like quite enough Sibelius to satisfy anybody but a
librarian.

The cds ARE in paper sleeves. So that "solution" will not save much space.

It is also not practical to put those sleeves together in one box.
Problem with the BIS Sibelius Edition is that the individual discs have no
information at all about their contents. The only information provided on the
discs is something like "Theatre music disc 1", "Theatre music disc 2",
etcetera. So you will always have to search in the booklet on which disc is
which piece. Therefor (it you don't want to listen to random Sibelius) it is
better to keep the "Theatre music" discs together with the "Theatre music"
booklet in the "Theatre music" box.

If there ever turns out to be a box to surround the other boxes, you might
send a polite letter of inquiry to BIS. In fact, if you have any BIS set
where the outer box has been damaged or gone missing, write them. I did so
once and received a far more useful response than I did from BMG about the
Toscanini Edition's bookcase.

Who said anything about listening to it? Collectors collect. :)

That's the way they're being issued now.
