The recent discussion about the 70 MET Norma which naturally became a
discussion about the Callas versions leads me to let anyone who is
interested know that the MYTO label has been issuing some excellent
transfers of early Callas material (when she was fat and vocally
prodigious). In some cases MYTO is using the BJR LP sets (the creme de
la creme of Callas during the LP days) as basis for their issues. They
are using BJR for the 1951 Aida (with the interpolated eflat at the
end of Act Two), the 52 Traviata with interpolated E flats at the end
of Acts One and Three (!) plus all the commentary, the Callas
interview at the end of Act One, and selections from the 52
Traviata,(however the MYTO complete 52 Traviata is the usual awful
sounding mess) and the 52 Rigoletto. They are using the Edward Elkins
archive version for the 1958 Dallas Medea (her best Medea since she
was pissed off at being fired from the MET that very day) - superior
to any other issue . The MYTO 55 RAI Norma is also from the 2008
official rebroadcast. They are now on sale really cheap at
www.norpete.com.

. Sure - however there are a couple you should avoid - the 57 Scala
Ballo which was assumed to be from BJR actually is not and runs sharp.
Their 50 Mexico Norma and Tosca are the same as Melodram and don't
sound so good (BJR never worked on those two) The 59 Covent garden
Medea is the same as Melodram and good sound, has more tracks and is
MUCH cheaper, their 61 Scala Medea is the same as the other transfers
with sinking pitch through the recording (someone should really work
on that), and their 51 Traviata is as ghastly as all the others. BJR
did work on the arias from that performance and tacked them onto the
end of thier LP release of the 52 Traviata and thats exactly what MYTO
offers (good work!!). Interesting business this. Wagner Fan

Divina Records owns the master copies of the Callas recordings issued
by BJR. They started with the Anna Bolena and have plans to reissue
more.

refer to this webpage where Divina lists all the performances for
which they have the BJR source material. http://www.divinarecords.com/future_releases.html
