Amusing six-minute sketch from this past weekend's Saturday Night
Live, Jimmy Fallon as Beethoven http://tiny.cc/5eve7 (scroll down to
screen 11) on the night of the premiere of Ode To Joy ('Vienna May 7,
1824') as he introduces his 'band' the way a Las Vegas lounge act
would. Ralph 'The Hitman' Hitler! The girl and I laughed throughout,
but we're both pretty easily amused. Kip will find a chuckle or
three, too, and Tepper will come up with a couple more one-liners, so
make sure he sees this. Schaffer will wonder if Fallon has ever seen
Das Boot. P.S. This is the second classical music sketch prepared for
the show this year. Justin Timberlake played Mozart in a skit that
was supposed to air last February, but it was cut due to time
constraints and was only staged at Friday rehearsal. I believe it can
be seen online.

That has its moments. I was reminded of a local musician I saw at a
roadhouse who said, "Hi, everybody. We're Billy and the Faggots! I'm Billy."

Also put me in mind of the Bonzo Dog Band's "The Intro and the Outro" —
"And, looking very relaxed, Adolf Hitler on vibes..."

But thanks for the chuckles. (Did I come up with the same word by
accident, or did you plant it in my mind?)

letters to be typed in news:GwKHq.32450$Dr1....@newsfe08.iad:
Interestingly (or at least, I think so), Fallon wound up reprising TWO John
Belushi roles. Remember Belushi playing Beethoven as a sort of Ray Charles
blues pianist? Then in the end credits, Jimmy wore a bee suit.

I like comedy that pokes fun at classical music. It's good to be regarded
as something other than "pobs and snurists." It's too bad that classical
music doesn't figure in the choice of musical guests, though.

(Yes, I remember Garrett Morris singing "Dalla sua pace," but he wasn't a
guest, and let's face it, Tito Schipa he ain't. Yes, I remember the
Phillip Glass ensemble, but they played something that sounded like a pop
tune, so I regard it as such. Of the Joseph Papp-Smear production of "The
Pirates of Penzance," let us say nothing. And when no less than Luciano
Pavarotti was booked, did they let him sing "Nessun dorma," or indeed
anything from opera? Hope, it was "Adeste fideles." And apparently he
wasn't enough to hold the attention of the audience, so they added Vanessa
Williams, as eye candy no doubt.)

One of my favorite bits was SCTV's "Godfather" saga with Johnny
Pavarotti (John Candy) nearly expiring on Di quella pira. Later, when
meeting with the godfather Guy Cablilerro, Johnny laments that Leonard
Bernstein (John Marly) has turned Johnny down for a part in LB's "War
Symphony." Guy has LB's horse (Mr. Ed) decapitated. SCTV had great
writing.
