>I attended one of her last full piano recitals - Carnegie
>Hall, 1981 - and it was, truly, one of the greatest piano recitals I
>have ever witnessed.
That was the same year of Stevie Nicks's first solo tour (in support
of "Bella Donna"), which ended with a triumphant five-night stand at
the newly renovated Fox Wilshire Theatre in Beverly Hills. I was there
for those concerts, but I missed Martha's Carnegie Hall recital.
Ouch, you missed Martha solo for Stevie Nicks? Well, I guess she was
one of the biggest female pop stars in the world at that time. You
know that, because of a horribly collapsed septum, she was getting
cocaine inserted up her rectum by a personal assistant at the time?
No, it's not just an urban legend. And not a job I would take!! As
Dave Chappelle said, 'Cocaine's a helluva drug!'
Btw, Tom, that was a nice message. I wish I could see Martha play
Schumann. Kreisleriana, Carnaval, even Gesänge der Frühe, wouldn't
that be something?
This CD was scheduled to release on her 70th birthday.

Yes, indeed.
And how about the Toccata, which she has used to warm up for decades.
She plays it at a tempo that would make your hair stand on edge.

Ho hum. Same old. Same old.

Availability in USA/Europe?
The Chopin appears to come from the concert listed here:

I think the smiling portrait of Argerich in the middle of the page is just
about the prettiest photograph of her I've ever seen.

Maybe ... No (limited Edition in Japan).
But "Overseas shipment" is available in HMV/Japan (you can see
"ENGLISH" in the up-right of the page. ).
Give me Martha Argerich circa 1965 any day! She was a gorgeous woman!
As for her pianism, I have mixed feelings about it. I prefer her
earlier recordings to her later ones. Too mannered and willfully
eccentric at times.
> Give me Martha Argerich circa 1965 any day!
Surely not her "Legendary 1965 Recital" from EMI ?
Do you prefer the 1979 English Suite to the 2007 one on DVD from
Verbier? I'm not so sure I would agree, they both seem outstanding in
different ways. The later maybe has a bit of human tenderness about
it. (according to this discography there's an even earlier one (1969)
which I would like to hear: http://homepage1.nifty.com/classicalcd/discography/argerich.htm
-- does anyone have the recording)
