Newly-released and available at Amazon, this 44-CD set. It is dominated
by the second Viennese school, with 4 disks of mostly-late Stravinsky,
4 of Gesualdo (I had not realized he did that), plus some Schütz, the
Monteverdi Vespers, and such 20th century composers as Hindemith
and Varèse. I find this really intriguing: I'm not sure I want
that much second-Viennese, but these are considered classic recordings,
and the quite-small fraction I've heard are certainly sucessful.

Translation of intro from hmv.co.jp:

Robert Craft's 100th anniversary release.
A musician who mastered the New Viennese School and the works of
Stravinsky before Boulez
Robert Craft, who devoted his life to the spread of 20th century music
The whole picture of Columbia recording is finally collected! Full
production limited

Musician Robert Craft made a great contribution to the popularization
of 20th century music. His recordings of Schoenberg, Webern, and the
late Stravinsky in Columbia in the 1950s and 1960s are crucial in
bringing the charm of these milestone works of 20th century music to
music fans around the world. played a role. British magazine
Gramophone praised him as "a man who tirelessly devotes himself to the
music of our time", and not only as a conductor but also as a writer
and heir to the Stravinsky Foundation, he is an important figure in
Stravinsky and 20th century music. Commemorating the 100th anniversary
of the birth of Craft, who published many books and also devoted
himself to the publication of musical scores, with the full
cooperation of the Craft/Stravinsky Foundation, all of Columbia's
recordings have been compiled into 44 CDs. , commemorating its
achievements.

[Stravinsky's Trusted Musician]
Craft was born on October 20, 1923 in Kingston, New York. Became a fan
of Stravinsky's music from the age of 12, studied at the Juilliard
School, and studied at Koussevitzky's rehearsals at the Tanglewood
Music Festival Berkusher Music Center, working with young composers
such as Bernstein, Harvey Shapiro, and Irving Fine. I made friends.
Craft, who made his debut as a conductor at the age of 24, featured
"Soldier's Tale," "Dumbarton Oaks," and "The Octet" at concerts he
hosted. Craft wrote letters directly to Stravinsky and exchanged them.
Finally, in 1948, Stravinsky appeared as a conductor at Craft's
concert and took up a revised version of "Symphony for Wind
Instruments". The composer, who saw the talent in his youth, invited
Craft to his Hollywood home as musical assistant and secretary for his
composition and conducting activities. Since then, the two worked
together for more than 20 years until his death. In place of the
composer, he gave preliminary training for concerts and recordings,
shared the conductor's podium with the composer at the concert, and
was also responsible for recording under the supervision of the
composer (Discs 40, 42-44). It is also noteworthy that the ballet
"Marriage" contains three types of manuscripts: the first manuscript,
the second manuscript, and the final manuscript.

[Recording of the world's first "Webern Complete Works" (Discs 2-4)]
In terms of recording, it was not Stravinsky's work that first made
Craft's name internationally, but the work of Webern, who can be
called the "minimalist" of the New Viennese School. Between 1954 and
1956, Craft recorded all of Webern's Opus numbered works in an
ensemble of freelance musicians, with Marni Nixon on soprano and
Leonard Stein on piano. The result was released in 1957 as a 4-disc
LP, and it was a big topic. High Fidelity, an authoritative music
magazine in the United States at the time, described it as "a grand
undertaking, achieved with great success, a performance that
understood Webern, a wonderful collaboration with Columbia Records,
and a contemporary It will remain as a major monument of discography
for a long time," and the magazine later counted it as "one of the 10
greatest monaural recordings."

[All 8 volumes of "Schoenberg Complete Works" achieved with stereo
recording (discs 21-39)]
Craft also worked on the performance and dissemination of the works of
Schoenberg, Webern's teacher, and continued to do so from 1953 (disc
1) in the monaural era, which was the first recording for Columbia, to
1966 in the stereo era. He recorded his works (many world premiere
recordings), and especially from 1963 he started selling a series
titled "The Music of Arnold Schoenberg (Complete Works of
Schoenberg)". In addition to the orchestral works that conducted the
Symphony Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra, and the Columbia Symphony
Orchestra, Glenn Gould, who was also a master of Schoenberg's music,
the Juilliard String Quartet, the Ormandy & Philadelphia Orchestra,
and singers who were active in the United States at the time.
Columbia's clear stereo recording has conveyed the charm of
Schoenberg's complex music to music fans in a very clear way. In many
cases, Craft himself wrote a detailed musical commentary (including
score examples and illustrations), and Schoenberg's standing position
in the history of music was defined in the correct form as text
information. By 1974, one-fourth of Schoenberg's works, 18 of which
were bad, had only been recorded by Craft, and High Fidelity magazine
described it as "the most important musical legacy of our time, the
music of Schoenberg, in disseminating it." It is the result of an
extraordinary and commendable effort." In Japan, the domestic LP was
released from Nippon Columbia at first, and then from CBS Sony. Due to
its unique jacket design, it has become widely listened to.

[Disclose the appeal of Alban Berg]
Craft also recorded the famous composer of the New Viennese School,
Alban Berg, in 1959 Altenberg Lieder (disc 11) and in 1960 the
masterpiece Three Orchestral Works (disc 14), and in 1961 released a
two-disc anthology (Discs 15-16) containing important works such as
"Lulu Suite", "Lyric Suite" and "Chamber Concerto". Contemporary music
guru Eric Salzman wrote in The New York Times of the recording of the
Chamber Concerto, "beautiful articulation and phrasing. The virtuosity
of the violinist and pianist is also impressive, a unity and yet a
surprising variety." It's a fitting concept for a work that showcases
sexiness, lightness and wit, and it's also full of tension and
power."Wine" and "Seven Early Songs" are equally excellent, and the
soprano singer's The exquisite singing of Bethany Beardsley and others
is a must-listen."

[Varese, Boulez, Stockhausen]
Among Craft's Colombian recordings, even more noteworthy are Boulez's
Le Marteau Saint-Maître (the second type of recording after Boulez's
self-made recording) and Stockhausen's Zeitmase ( This is also the
second kind of recording after the Boulez disc) in the United States
(1958, disc 8), and two Edgar Varèse albums released in 1960 and 1962
(disc 12 , 20). In particular, Varese's album contains major
orchestral works, and played an epoch-making role in quickly making
the world aware of the fun of this daring composer.

[Gesualdo, Monteverdi, Bach, Mozart]
Craft was a jockey of contemporary music, but he also had a deep
interest in early music, and was particularly fascinated by the unique
composer Carlo Gesualdo of the Italian Renaissance period, recording
four LPs (discs). 6, 9, 17, 41, including the famous mezzo-soprano
Marilyn Horne). Gesualdo's works, full of bold chromatic progressions,
modulations and dissonances, combined with his curious biographical
episodes, have attracted a great deal of attention. In addition, Craft
wrote Monteverdi's masterpiece "Evening Prayer to the Blessed Virgin
Mary" (discs 32, 33), motets by Schutz (disc 10), Bach's cantatas
(discs 13, 27), Mozart's Grand Partita" (Disc 19) is also recorded.

[Original LP jacket design adopted]
As with the previous series, each disc in this box set is enclosed in
a paper jacket designed for the first time in the United States, with
detailed recording data and track list, unpublished session photos and
illustrations, excerpts from Craft's comments. It is housed in a
cardboard clamshell box along with a 124-page color separate manual
(in European language), increasing its value as a collector's item.
After Stravinsky's death, Craft curtailed his public performances and
began to focus more on writing books and essays and editing scores,
but he continued to record until his last years, producing three
versions of "Spring Festival", Stravinsky's works including two
versions of "Oedipus Rex", and Schoenberg's works including "Grös
Song". With the CD of the epoch-making recordings to Colombia compiled
in this box, we can finally look back on Craft's achievements, which
should be ranked alongside Pierre Boulez in terms of recordings.

My copy arrived...initially I balked, but price dropped a few days ago, temporarily as it turned out, and I couldn't -- or didn't -- resist.

Shouldn't Marilyn Nixon be Marni Nixon?

The volume of the first song is very loud -- the dynamics range
between pp and pppp.

Current price at US Amazon is $199.01, plus $45.65 (!!) if you want it
shipped to Canada. That is about $327.33 US. This is sold by Amazon
Global Store UK, shipped from Luxembourg. Amazon.ca price is currently
$320.09, shipped from Amazon Canada, free Prime shipping. This
Canadian price does not include tax. I think the price at .com went
down about as much as the one at .ca went up. I (in Canada) paid about
$275 (pre-ordered).

Did Craft anywhere in his writings say why they used the CBC Symphony
Orchestra (presumably based in Toronto) for some of the Schoenberg
project (particularly Volume 2) and other things? Probably because
"the price was right."
