Pianist Steven Osborne plays Messiaen’s complete “ Vingt Regards sur l’infant Jesus “ live today, Wednesday, Nov.6, without Pause. I have not heard yet, may not, but again assume will be of interest to many here , thus this post :

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/live:bbc_radio_three

My recording is Roger Muraro on Phillips cd.Osborne has apparently not recorded yet, although would not be surprised if this recital was recorded for later release.

Osborne related that after a live performances of the work in Japan, and with another recital the following night ( whether or not same work not clear),Osborne put his hands into a bucket of ice water for a time, a suggestion he got from tennis great Andy Murray.

Osborne’s Regards has been available on Hyperion for a long time. It’s very fine IMO.

Thanks ! I find I searched Amazon-US under "Stephen" , rather than "Steven". A couple cd's of his did come up under "Stephen" , but not all of his.

When I heard Osborne perform this in the early 2000's (slightly before
the recording which John Gavin has already pointed out), I have a vague
recollection that there was one intermission. He asked at the start
that there be no applause between movements, and would have asked
for no applause at the end, except that his wife threatened to throw
him out if he did (or something like that). In any case, enormously
absorbing and impressive.

PS: just out of curiosity: whag leads you to advance from XXIV to
XXV? Must be pretty momentous!

(A) A recent live performance of a complete "Vingt Regards".

(B) To make easier for those using a newsreader vs.Google Groups ( as I understand it ; I use Google ).

(C) Perhaps hubris on my part.

Also,be patient as it takes a while for the Radio 4 site to load up once you hit the "Speel volledige" button at top right, and each successive selection also takes a bit of time to load after the prior work ends.

Alma Quartet play Schulhoff's 1st String Quartet at the Park Hall, Musis in Arnhem, and the Gryphon Trio perform Brahms's Piano Trio No.1 in B flat at the Concert Hall in Tilburg, both recently.

My first hearing of the Schulhoff , great, will have to hear again. The Brahms of course a sine qua non I find I under - appreciate among his greatest works.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m000b7qx

That Western culture could produce a Brahms and exterminate a Schulhoff remains unfathomable, and a sad commentary on our times when nothing has really changed.

On the website they said Gibbons was in the mix, but he didn't make it.

A Janequin transcription would have been good! Mozart's Vogelfanger or the Beatles' Norwegian Wood, which might have been considered, are too obvious and would not have fit as well with the works that were well chosen...

This was an imaginatively conceived and well played set. The mass, momentum, and dissonance that she builds in Prophecies were quite effective, IMO.

Thanks for posting. I love the Halvorsen adaptation but have not heard Handel's Passacaglia on piano -- so this was treat including the encore!

First, human nature, notwithstanding what some seem to think, will never
change. Since we are imperfect, we will never totally eradicate
atrocity. The spread of democracy has, and hopefully will continue to,
constrain the worst of our tendencies.

Second, not sure why you singled out Western culture. Eastern culture
has committed its share of atrocities.

The American experience since the 2016 election does not instill that much optimism in me.

No doubt, but to my knowledge Eastern culture neither produced nor exterminated Brahms or Schulhoff, thus was not relevant.

Rzewski: Nano sonata no.36 (to a young man)
Scarlatti: Sonata in D minor, K9

Another interesting recital. Wonderful change of pace , if a bit much of the same, often percussive, sound world. The Nobre and Ginastera No.3 new to me.The Nobre the highlight for me, will listen to that one again:

Enregistré le 03/05/2017 à la Fundación Juan March à Madrid

Alberto Ginastera - Trois danses argentines

Heitor Villa-Lobos - A prole do bebê (La descendance de bébé), Livre I : Les poupées)

Alberto Ginastera - Sonate No. 1 pour piano, op 22

Astor Piazzolla - Les Quatre saisons de Buenos Aires

Marlos Nobre - Sonate pour piano sur un thème de Bartók

Alberto Ginastera - Sonate pour piano No. 3, op. 54

Astor Piazzolla - Libertango

From the pianist:

“The recording named “Horacio Lavandera Plays Astor Piazzolla” received the Award “Golden Melómano” in 2016. The publication stated: “Lavandera takes us into the world of Piazzolla brilliantly, using the typical rhythmic flexibility and freedom of aesthetic expression of the compo ser”. – Francisco J. Balsera. Melómano, The Classical music magazine.”

“The works included in this CD are my arrangements for piano, based mainly on the work that Astor Piazzolla did with his Quintet. The special union of sounds of the bandoneon, electric guitar, piano, violin and double-bass, and the way of composing this chamber music, conformed a synthesis of his style. It was one of his most successful projects that changed forever the typical music of Buenos Aires, the "Tango". The history of Argentina
during the twentieth century was full of contradictions and unevenness, in his work Piazzolla shows these contrasts. His art is always in the middle of an abysm. Between being and not to be.
To make these arrangements I carefully studied the scores of the Quintet, besides the long listening time of the existing recordings for this ensemble. The way to ornament the melodic drafts are always different. The accompaniment of the left hand, for example, sounds sometimes "dirt". My father José María, a founding member of the Orchestra of Tango in Buenos Aires for over thirty years, advised me in many aspects. I must also mention the
important influences of the great pianists of the genre: Horacio Salgán, Carlos García, Osvaldo Manzi, Dante Amicarelli, Atilio Stampone y Pablo Ziegler.”

I am a Nelson Goerner fan.Still remember being amazed at his debut all-Chopin cd on EMI years ago, ca.1991 or 1994 I believe. Live here from London's Wigmore Hall, Nov.26,2019.Rarely heard (?) Faure, which Goerner thinks is Faure’s finest solo piano piece ( hmmm ? ). The Brahms a huge challenge live for any pianist ,of course, but fine playing throughout the programme , with exceptional Liszt to my ear.

Brahms: Piano Sonata No 3 in F minor Op 5

Pianist Benjamin Grosvenor plays, and conducts, Bach's keyboard concerto BWV 1056 and Mozart's PC # 9, K.271, with Britten Sinfonia in London recently. I particularly enjoyed the Bach :

Fww, worth hearing (IMHO ) ,take your pick ( or not ):

Martinu’s VC # 1, Frank Peter Zimmermann,Lan Shui conducting National Orchestra of France, in Paris,Nov.29,2018,wonderful virtuosic work ,fine slow mov.,my first hearing today.Ordered from Presto an mp3 download of the Hyperion cd set track (different artists) to add to my existing VC # 2 of the composer.Wonderful encore, too, slow mov. from Bartok Sonata for Solo Violin :

https://www.rtbf.be/auvio/detail_concert-du-soir?id=2575194

Schumann’s PC,Arthur Jussen,Nicholas Collon conducting Residentie Orkest at the Concertgebouw,Dec.8,2019,a fav PC of mine, here a lyrical, relaxed, nostalgia-tinged reading not overplayed :

https://www.nporadio4.nl/concerten/9369-arthur-jussen-speelt-schumanns-pianoconcert

Prokofieff’s VC # 1, Ziyu He, Ilyich Rivas conducting Ulster Orchestra,Dec.9 in Londonderry,a fav VC of mine, glorious final mov. My first hearing of the impressive violinist:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m000c4kh

Mozart’s PC # 22,K.482, Martin Helmchen, Philharmonia Orchestra under Jakub Hrusa, London,Dec.8,2019,Helmchen says Mozart’s most technically difficult for the pianist , and then chance to hear LvB Sym. # 4 I had not listened to for years.K.482 not my fav Mozart PC by any means (however, has a wonderful operatic slow mov.!), but Helmchen more interesting as he has matured ( unlike my cheap shiraz ) as were the 2 cadenzas here, not identified:

I have Shui conducting the Beethoven symphonies with the Copenhagen PO.
Orchestra isn't good and the conducting is odd. Can't imagine why I
bought it.

For the Martinu concertos, I have Hogwood/Matousek and Neumann/Suk in #1
and Belohavek/Faust, Kalmar/Koh, Neumann Suk again and Leconte/Louis
Kaufman (1955)in #2. They're all great, but I am fondest of the Kaufman.
I'm no expert but it seems like amazing violin playing to me. Also, the
recording is old like me.

Agreed, and the music is superb in both cases. My only #1 is now Hogwood/Matousek, only # 2 Belohavek/Faust.Apparently # 2 was written for Mischa Elman, cant recall for whom # 1.

speaking of 'old people', I heard Kaufman live in Carnegie Hall in the middle 50s. Had a beautiful tone, was admired by Heifetz, made many recordings

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X56uj3JRsA0

A post here fromanither group, very helpful re:the Poulenc Violin Sonata :

" Poulenc's chamber music is really excellent. Composers used different genres for different artistic purposes and, for Poulenc, chamber music was not always an occasion to be "light" about composition. There are five volumes of his complete chamber music on Naxos and none of it includes a string quartet. His chamber music is like a musical autobiography, from the light Histoire de Babar, for children, to the more somber Sonata for violin and piano written in occupied Paris in memory of Spanish poet Frederico Garcia Lorca and performed there in 1943, with Ginette Neveu and Poulenc at the piano. That's a bold political work when you know the whole context. "

I have several of the pianist’s cd’s, which I admire greatly, thus was anxious to hear this performance, perhaps my first live hearing of him. To my ear , a lyrical, somber , contemplative, smaller-scaled and unhurried reading throughout, especially in the first 3 movs here, in contrast to darker, more ominous, frenetic, take no prisoners readings I often hear. Interesting approach , but I was not convinced fully captured the work here. Recommended hearing ,though.

The programme of the German pianist Mario Häring includes the set of variations on Schubert’s German Dance D643 (1819) which was the experimentalist Helmut Lachenmann’s first published piece (1956).Still in his early twenties, the Chinese pianist Xinyuan Wang brings together two composers, Schubert in expansive mode in his 1825 sonata and Bartók at his most percussive in his example from 1926. “

Simon Trpceski plays the Brahms 2nd PC with Oslo Phil and Vasily Petrenko recently :

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m000ds45

Had not heard the pianist nor Petrenko in this work.At least the pianist seems to feel the work needs a bit less "seriousness" , more drama, even an occasional touch of almost Lisztian display in the first mov. Not my cup of tea, but may be yours, and in any event a different approach.Remaining movs.went much better, quite well in fact, to my ear.Worth hearing on balance.

Sibelius 5th Symphony also on the broadcast.

Indeed !

The Schumann Op.16 is not a work I connect with much.To my ear it does not reward much the effort of a pianist, works only if presented as a dark, arching vision reflecting some of the composer’s mental illness, rather than as a lighter, more episodic work.I of course recognize my probable lack of comprehension here, and certainly defer to the expertise and different view obviously held by Grosvenor. The Janacek was sensitively played, can stand with my Firkusny recording and all others I’ve heard. The highlight of the recital for me was the Prokofieff, Grosvenor’s performance adding measures of color and expressive nuance to even the efforts in my collection of live 1961 Carnegie recording by Rubinstein, an early Kissin selection on Melodiya , and a couple from 1962-63 of Richter. The Liszt was, however, a stunning live achievement , yet still wonderfully lyrical.

Benjamin Grosvenor,May,2019,Barbican,London:

Schumann: Blumenstück, Op.19 , Kreisleriana, Op.16
Leoš Janáček : Piano Sonata 1.X.1905
Prokofiev: Visions fugitives, Op.22 (selection)
Liszt: Réminiscences de Norma de Bellini

Encores: Grieg Lyric Piece, “Erotik” ; Ginastera Argentinian Dance No. 3, “Dance of the Arrogant Cowboy”.

FYI, Netherlands Radio 4 is featuring a series of live recitals ( all I believe on the “Avondconcert “ series under Radio 4’s “Concerten” listing ) presenting all the Beethoven Violin Sonatas, one with known artists, rest with less well known. Starts with Ibragimova/Tiberghien in Nos.3,9 , the Jan.20 Avondconcert , thru Feb. 4 so far :

Perhaps No.6 in a recital Feb.5.

For some reason, I dont connect much with the “Kreutzer”, Nos. 5,7 the gems for me,although 3 is quite sprightly.

Pianist Boris Giltburg and the Brussels Philharmonic under Thierry Fischer present the Beethoven piano concertos live from RTBF,Flagey starting Feb.13 with Nos. 2 and 1. Podcast here :

https://www.rtbf.be/auvio/detail_concert-du-soir?id=2600844

I listen to these 2 primarily for their slow movs., but also imagining the impacts of the works and Beethoven’s playing at the time.Interesting how “brief” the slow movs. of 4,5 seem in comparison to the slow.movs.of Nos.1,2. Giltburg very fine here throughout both concertos.

Podcast of Nos.3,4 played Feb.14 will probably be posted Monday, Feb.15 ; I have not heard the performances , yet. No.5 will apparently be played Feb.15 , and I suspect posted Feb.16.

Listened today to a live Feb.9 performance at Cardiff by BBCNOW / Miguel-Prieto on BBC Radio 3 of Walton’s Sym.# 1. I have a much lauded Previn recording. The work made a very strong initial impression on my first hearing years ago , but not so much on later re-hearings including today.Maestro suggested also hearing Walton’s 2nd String Quartet, apparently written about same time as the Symphony, which Quartet ( my first hearing ) I enjoyed more than the Symphony. I have no recording yet, but heard this Chandos cd by the Doric Quartet :

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vIjAud_NZZ4 Recommended !

Then by chance on to Walton’s Piano Quartet (another first hearing for me ), live 2016 performance video here with one Notos Quartet : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SDdDeuTaDsk

Amazing work !! Great performance ! Recommended !

I’m off to Presto Classical for downloads of these two.

There is available the Sargent recording with the New Philharmonia of the Walton 1st, that is well worth considering. Below is a YT link of the first movement. This was released at the same time as the Previn, and was sadly overlooked (Previn LSO could do no wrong at the time). But really the Sargent is weightier and more deliberately paced, and frankly imho better than the LSO Previn. I had it on LP and wore it out.

I have also heard that Haitink is worth checking out in this work, but presently very difficult to get hold of.

I listened to the Chaconne and to the quirky little encore. Yes, interesting contrast with Colli.

Was Libeer a little shaky around the 6:30 to 6:45 mark? Your ear is far better trained than mine. But I am forgiving, because I preferred his approach to the music over Colli's. When the playing is good enough, one's preference comes down to small stylistic differences, which in turn become magnified on the canvas of great art.
