Looks nice. But I'm getting tired of those bulk boxes with recordings many
interested people already have (for more than 50%). Who is going to buy this?
Those who were not interested in the first (and second and third) place, but get
interested now only because of the price - thus: dependig on what the price will
be?

concertos, or Haitink's DLVE.

I'm even less excited about this one than I was about the Decca and
MLP boxes, neither of which I bought, or intend to buy.

Gardiner's Verdi Requiem? Really???

And Philips could have included Heinrich Schiff, an infinitely better
cellist, in the same coupling, or better yet, Maurice Gendron in the
Dvorak.

Yes, really. Even Gardiner/HIP hater David Hurwitz ranks it as a
reference recording.

To my ears, it's hopelessly small-scale, and the mezzo and tenor
soloists are all wrong for the music.

As I recall, the Markevitch recording was issued on LP by Philips, and
would have been a better choice.

(snip list)

Well, I tend to agree with everyone else. While there are many excellent
things here, there are too many incompletes. For example, van Beinum's
Brahms Violin Concerto but no Brahms 1? The Haitink DLvdE, but no 9th?
Kocsis/DeWaart Rachmaninov 2 and 3, but no 1/4/Paganini Rhapsody? Etc., etc.
A good survey, I suppose, but not for the folks here. But then we're
weird :)

Release date November 6. So it's a Christmas gift item you wouldn't
buy for yourself but would give to somebody you need to impress who
"likes" classical music. It has some good stuff in it but it looks
more like a sampler than a carefully assembled collection. And only
one Arrau?

Not one recording from Gérard Souzay!
Why?

I imagine Philips will have no problem selling the entire limited run
of this set in the Asian market. I think the target audience is
completists/collectors. If it doesn't sell, they will rejoice in the
fact that they weren't stuck with a ton of inventory.

Isn't this a complimentary box to the Decca Sound box, which was supposed to display the progressive innovations/improvements in audio quality, especially highlighting items that would have been recognized in the industry as notable achievements?

I think the primary market here then is Asian and South America, as most of those who would be interested in North America and Western Europe will already own a large amount of this.

I may get this as I don't have many of them. If they'd been clever they'd have included a few rarities like Haitink's Scheherazade.

Prestoclassical.co.uk is selling the set sooner than American Amazon, and cheaper as well. Closer to the release date, there might be more European sellers who will adjust their price to the dollar. (Many times, Presto is cheaper, even after currency exchange, than American vendors.)

I am interested in this set as the first records I started collecting, rather than just having, were on Philips. Their pressings were first-rate and I always loved the sound. So I already have 50%+ of the recordings here, and the ones I don't have, well, I didn't really want at the time, I suppose. But I'm interested in seeing some history of the label and some appreciation for what they accomplished, in terms of repertory, in a fairly short period of time.

Some of the choices for this box set are certainly questionable; as other posters have noted, so many of these recordings are never out of print and readily available cheaply. I was hoping for some earlier, rarer recordings before digital remakes--such as Davis' London Beethoven (and Mozart) symphony recordings and Haitink's earlier Bruckner and Mahler. While Davis's 7th on EMI from 1961 is so well-praised, the 70s version with the LSO still stands, to my ears, as the best 7th I've ever heard. (It was available on CD for a short time only in Japan.)

Perhaps we'll be able to pick up the box set at a steep discount by the beginning of winter. Its appeal is bound to be limited, owing to its cost and the duplication of several iconic recordings...
