Does anyone know of a U.S. source for Altus recordings? Also, who is
the cheapest importer for Japanese classical CDs. I have previously
ordered from Japanese Amazon but find their selection more limited than
that of HMV of Towerrecords Japan.

Thanks,
Phillip

HMV certainly has the largest selection of any I've come across, but
you will have to accept their high FedEx shipping fees and, if it
applies, the import tax. Otherwise I think CD Japan is good--they ship
regular airmail--though I'm not sure if they sell Altus discs.

I hadn't heard of CDJapan before, but found it easily. I wasn't terribly
impressed by the selection on their so-called "Jazz/Classical" page (which
appeared to be "lots and lots and lots and lots of jazz, and maybe a tiny
bit of classical too as a sort of afterthought"), but a search on the name
"Ormandy" brought up a few items, including the ones I want the most:
Shostakovich Symphonies ## 13 and 14.

Now watch Mr. Hetherwick wake up and issue those here. I'll just bet.

Precisely, you must search by the name of the performer on that site,
otherwise little will appear. Their prices are the same as HMV and
their selection is much smaller, but what tilts the balance in their
favour is the option to ship by standard airmail, especially for me
here in London as it avoids the heavy import tax (about 20%).

Yes, the opportunity to have two Japanese BMG CDs shipped to me for a total
of only approximately $34 was too good to pass up.

I'm sure everyone else has it already, but I ordered the Giulini/VPO
Bruckner 9 from them for $11. I'm guessing this was a midprice Japanese
reissue.

I got excellent and prompt service from CDJapan
recently. Here's the website:

Is that the "must-have" recently noted

My hunch--though I could be completely wrong--is that their classical
section is something quite new, so although they don't have a
tremendous amount to offer like HMV, they are at least offering all of
the new and forthcoming releases already--such as Afanassiev, Cortot
and Sofronitsky--and if they keep this up they'll definitely be a
valuable resource in the future.

Altus in Japan are releasing some rare recordings of Kondrashin conducting the French National Radio Orchestra in '69/74/76 -- Shostakovich 8, Sibelius 2, Tchaikovsky 4, three CDs and SACDs.

Also a Mravinsky / Shostakovich 8 from 1982 remastered from 'the widow holdings'.

HMV JP lists them and gives detailed info in Japanese on each disc.
