I think that one was part of a "Mahler Month" during which the NYPO
spent (possibly) September, 1976, in Carnegie Hall playing all the
Mahler symphonies, ending with no.3 cond. Pierre Boulez, who then
conducted the same work in Avery Fisher Hall to open the 1976/77 season
of the NYPO. These performances were reviewed in _The New Yorker_ by
Andrew Porter in an essay titled "Mahlerei" (Nov.8, 1976, reprinted in
A.P., _Music of Three Seasons: 1974-1977_, New York: Farrar Straus
Giroux, 1978, pp.425-430). Porter writes: "Erich Leinsdorf conducted
No.5, Boulez Nos.3, 7, and 9, and James Levine the rest." Among the
"rest" were some songs. I suspect that the information could be gleaned
by consulting an archival copy of the NY Times from that period,
especially a Sunday edition with the ads for musical events.
