I deeply miss Bob Kerr's Off the Record on CBC Stereo; I discovered a lot
of new composers and a lot of new delightful recordings from his show. The
replacement show is hardly worth listening to anymore.

Anyone have any thoughts on this subject?

Yes, I don't miss him at all. Now, if only they'd ditch Jurgen
("Visi") Gothe I'd be really happy.

Many people miss Bob Kerr, and even given that the new program is supposed
to be a request show, there ought to be a place for the new recordings,
unusual and interesting music that were Kerr's staples. The CBC ought to
be looking for a producer who will reshape the program. Even a half hour
a day would be welcome.

I believe he's on for an hour Thursday nights, though it's not quite the
same as before.

I don't miss his garrulousness one bit, but he at least sincerely liked
what he was doing, he occasionally played XX century music, and he made an
honest effort to inform. His replacements, all of them, come across as
bored or animated in the manner of sports commentators (I have no idea
what's worse) and completely formulaic. And their pronunciation of foreign
names is most annoyingly inept.

Weekday programming is a waste of so much good air time. Three hours of
tidbits with Peter Togni, two hours on inane chat (and occasional bland
music) with Bill Richardson, and then three hours of snippets with the
ever amusing Jurgen Gothe. In the evening, Katherine Duncan's "eclectic
mix" -- another hour shot, unless you collect mispronunciations. Why, in
this company Peter Tiefenbach's shortcomings (and who has none :-) seem
minor indeed.

So yes, I miss Bob Kerr. I miss professionalism.

I think Bob Kerr's loss feels more acute because the afternoon shows ("As
You Like It" & "Disc Drive") are so bloody awful. Bob Kerr used to annoy
me as well, too much British light music, Massanet, and Tin-Pan alley
musicals. Though he could play good stuff occassionally. I definitely
don't miss his voice. CBC stereo has become a real mockery of classical
music.

Someone commented in another post that Kerr had a certain degree of
professionalism which most of the present hosts seem to lack. I can't
say I'm enamoured with "Radio Concert Hall". I hope that "Saturday
Afternoon at the Opera" and "Choral Concert" don't go the same way....

But, of all the new programs that have appeared on CBC Stereo during the
past 2 years, I especially like "Sound Advice". In my mind, it was a
show long overdue and Phillips does play some of the newer releases. I
was made aware of Paul McCreesh's recordings (especially the Praetorius
Lutheran Christmas mass) through that show.

Have you noticed that the same pieces of music seem to be played on
"Stereo Morning" every 2 or 3 months? But I have to agree that CBC Stereo
during the weekdays has become a wasteland. I've long avoided Jurgen
Gothe because I find his commentary annoying and I quickly became
disenchanted with Bill Richardson when he took over from Leon Cole during
his 6-month leave last year.

We have CKUA here in Alberta, but I find much the same thing.
Unfortunately, due to funding cutbacks, they've started running
advertisements.

"Sound Reviews", a victim of an earlier round of CBC cutbacks, was a much
more interesting program. The Quiz was much better, too--this one depends
on technical tricks half the time.

Yes, I miss the days when, every Sunday, you could get a full concert on
the CBC from the Toronto, Montreal or Vancouver Symphonies. But, what do you
want? First, the Conservatives and then the Liberals decided that we don't
need the CBC, crappy U.S. sitcoms are good enough for us. I do rather like
Jurgen Gothe, however, I just wish he wouldn't play so many of those endless,
glum, jazz selections.

I think someone mentioned this earlier, but I'll point out that Kerr is
on every Thursday at 9pm, playing an hour of favourites, during the
"Encore" program. (Speaking of which, the hour of 'eclectic mix' on
Encore is being replaced by a severely truncated "Arts Tonight").

I agree that Tiefenbach is one of the only beacons of intelligence left
in an increasingly barren schedule. If you're looking to apportion blame
for what's happening, look no further than federal government cutbacks,
which directly effects the budget for concert-recordings and arts
reporting -- soon you'll notice the same concerts being played
repeatedly on Concert Hall and Encore, because CBC can no longer afford
to record new concerts.

Gothe is *intolerable* (IMO).

Cheers,
Paul

I woke up in the year 2018 wonder what had happened to CBC FM. (I it now CBC ONE or TWO. It's an example where two should be one. Oh well.

In my early years I hated Bob Kerr but over time I grew to love him. He thought me about Mozart, readings of Shakespeare on Saint Crispin's Day, and Saint Cecilia's Day.

He reminded me of even then no,longer existed. I miss him with much reverence

Thanks Bob
