> 2- Ancerl
I suppose I'd *start* with the Janacek Sinfonietta. Can't think of any
outright bad commercial Ancerl recordings. See
http://www.supraphon.cz/eng/casopisy.php
Oh, someone's going to be miffed that you didn't include Ansermet.
> 3- Barbirolli
Probably his VW 5, coupled with Bax's Tintagel.
> 4- Beecham
There are some nice collections of short works on GROC. It's all good. I'd
single out his Midsummer Night's Dream Overture on EMI, but it doesn't seem
to be available at the moment. EMI has let a lot of stereo Beecham go OOP.
Where's Lenny? I'd go with his Copland Appalachian Spring on Sony for
starters. Any American music he recorded, but a CD of Thompson, Harris and
Diamond is prime.
> 6- Boehm
Well, he had a fairly select recorded repetoire, and he did well in what he
recorded. I like his Beethoven Symphonies, but I also like his Schubert,
Haydn and Mozart, so my taste may be suspect here. I suppose Wozzeck is
another good choice.
> 10- Celibidache
I am very impressed by the EMI Bruckner 6 championed by several other folks
on the group, but the only other Celi I've heard is a very good Bruckner 3
on Exclusive (Stuttgart 1981).
> 11- Cluytens
There was a very nice Artist Profile set on EMI (68220), and BRO still has
this:
> 14- Dorati
I like his digital Sacre on Decca, and also his digital Miraculous
Mandarin. But maybe it's the Decca recording team I was impressed with ;}
> 16- Furtwaengler
I started with the EMI studio Beethoven 5.
Giulini: Tchaikovsky 6/EMI or maybe Berlioz Romeo & Juliet orchestral music.
> 17- Haitink
Das Lied von der Erde with Baker.
> 18- Horenstein
Nielsen 5. Haven't listened to it in a long time, though, so nostalgia may
be at play here.
> 19- E Jochum
Bruckner 7/EMI
> 21- Karajan
Either stereo EMI Sibelius 5 (BRO has 66599 with the Philharmonia)
Wagner overtures and preludes on EMI.
> 22- Kempe
There's that great R. Strauss box, but that may be a bit more than you're
looking for (BRO still has some of the older Strauss chubby box sets; same
remasterings). I like his Brahms with Berlin, and he did a gorgeous
recording of the Korngold Symphony. Let's go with the Korngold.
Kertesz: Dvorak 9 with VPO; Bluebeard's Castle. Do hear the Bluebeard.
> 23- Kleiber
I suppose the Beethoven 5+7 is the choice for C. Kleiber.
> 24- Klemperer
Mendelssohn 3+4 on EMI. This shows that he was not always a heavy conductor
in his old age.
> 25- Kletzki
Mahler 4, which was on Seraphim and also on an excellent EMI Artist Profile
set.
> 27- Kondrashin
Rimsky Capriccio Espagnol on RCA.
> 29- Kubelik
Famous for his Ma Vlast recordings. I suppose I'd go with the last one on
Supraphon. There was also a nice EMI Artist Profile set with a beautiful
Borodin 2.
> 30- Leinsdorf
A great Prokofiev conductor. Symphony 5 and Lt. Kije (2 recordings)
appeared on CD. You'll have to go to private sources for the rest.
> 36- Mitropoulos
Those great Prokofiev Romeo and Juliet selections on Sony.
> 37- Monteux
I've always loved his Enigma and Haydn Variations on Decca. BRO has the
Enigma.
That famous Daphnis seemed to lose its magic on CD.
> 38- Munch
The early 50s Fantastique (not the greatest sound). The EMI Great
Conductors set is very good.
> 39- Ormandy
Sibelius: 4 Legends
Shostakovich: Symphonies 4 & 10
> 46- Scherchen
Beethoven 3+6 on Westminster.
> 49- Sejna
Whatever you can get, I suppose, but I'd single out the Martinu Double
Concerto.
> 50- Silvestri
Another nice EMI Artist Profile set (68229) which includes the famous In The
South. BRO still has that set, and a lot of other Silvestri on the Disky
and Royal Classics labels.
There is also a good CD on Supraphon with Enescu and Ravel (good mono).
> 52- Solti
Was always fond of his Bartok, particularly the analog MSPC. Guess I'd go
with his digital Bartok CfO (Decca recording team again) in the abscence of
that MSPC.
> 53- Stokowski
The Phase 4 Scheherazade, now reissued on Cala. Also his Ravel and Debussy
on EMI. The Great Conductors set is very good. There was also an EMI CD of
the Toch Symphony 3 and Martin's Petite Symphonie that I highly recommend
(with Steinberg's Mathis).
> 56- Szell
I don't have a lot of Szell, but I think his Hindemith Symphonic
Metamporphoses is great.

Minor point; the Toch Symphony 3 is also with Steinberg. Certainly
agree on the recommendability of this CD. Only the Martin is conducted
by Stoki (one of the few performances if his that I own or like).
Tomorrow, of course, the list might be completely different.

Of course there are many people missing from the list. Few of these were easy
choices; most were impossibly difficult.
Oddly enough, I wrestled with my choice for Rodzinski as much as anybody--my
second choice for him was his white-hot Sibelius 2, but the Das Lied recording
is a recent "discovery" for me, and I still can't get over how incredibly
flexible and "vocal" the orchestra is in his hands--it's one of the most
expressive, yet disciplined performances of anything I've ever heard. The
prevalence of Mahler on the list is no accident, but that of the NYPO may be a
fluke: so many great conductors have been recorded (legally or not) with that
orchestra, it was hard to ignore how great they sound under the right
leadership. In the case of Tennstedt, I think I chose the LPO 6th just to avoid
having yet another NYPO choice (the 5th in the big Mahler box).
