Hi Everyone:

I notice that I missed my initial opportunity as this set has gone out of print...and now a used copy is over $65 US...that I can find.

Does anyone know a source to purchase this at a lower price?

Thanks

What we need is a big reissue box of ALL the Previn LSO recordings from RCA - their first Rachmaninoff 2nd Symphony, Tchaikovsky Little Russian, etc. A lot of good things that haven't made it to CD. Seems logical but hasn't happened yet....

Previn's first classical RCA recordings were as a concerto accompanist: Rachmaninoff's 1st & 4th Piano Concertos with Leonard Pennario and the Royal Philharmonic; and Khachaturian's Piano Concerto plus Bloch's 'Scherzo Fantasque' with Lorin Hollander, again with the RPO.

Then came his London Symphony recordings: the Shostakovich 5th; the Tchaikovsky 2nd plus the Liadov "Russian Folksongs"; Rachmaninoff's 2nd Symphony (somewhat abridged but a terrific performance, nevertheless); Walton's 1st Symphony (still one of the best performances on disc); a 'Music from France' collection (Francaix, Ibert and Satie-Debussy) with John de Lancie, oboe; Nielsen's 1st Symphony plus the 'Saul and David' Act 2 Prelude; Rachmaninoff's 3rd Symphony and 'The Rock'; Mozart's 'Impresario' with the English Chamber Orchestra; and then the Vaughan Williams cycle.

Interspersed with that were some more LSO recordings: Rimsky-Korsakov's 'Scheherazade' and two 'Tsar Sultan' numbers; Lalo's 'Symphonie Espagnole' and Ravel's 'Tzigane' with Itzhak Perlman; Richard Strauss's 'Don Juan,' 'Rosenkavalier' Suite and the 'Munchen Waltz'; Mendelssohn's 'Italian' Symphony and 'Ruy Blas' Overture plus Prokofiev's 'Classical'; Mendelssohn's 1st Piano Concerto with Joseph Kalichstein (the 'fillers' were solo piano pieces); and Villa-Lobos's Guitar Concerto with Julian Bream (more solo 'fillers' from the guitarist).

I think that's more or less a complete Previn / RCA list (corrections / additions welcome!) but as per the comments above, there's scope not only for an all-Vaughan Williams box (a re-mastered reissue perhaps?) and also another box for everything else!

The set conducted by Sir Andrew Davis is excellent too. Better recorded than the Boult, which also seems a bit fidgetty in the Pastoral Symphony.

I've heard a lot of good things about the Slatkin set and it's on Amazon wish list. Now might be the time to buy it as it's only $12.99!

I have it, and I will be disposing of it soon. It's not at all bad, but this conductor, in my opinion, doesn't quite get inside the composer as well as some others, such as Previn, Boult and A. Davis. There's just this feeling that rather than letting the music unfold at RVW's rate, he tends to nudge it along and jostle its elbow. (Others may have entirely different impressions.) By the way, considering the 5th symphony alone, my admiration for the recording by Robert Spano increases every time I hear it.

I have the Slatkin. I picked it up on a lark because it was cheap but also I had heard good things. It is certainly not my fvorite - I think he pushes the tempos too much. This can be good in some 4 but not so good in others 3. Still at $12.99 how can you go wrong

Was the lark ascending? :-)

The only complete set I've got is the Rozhdestvensky / USSR one, simply because that's the way it was issued and also because it's interesting to hear the only RVW cycle not played by a British orchestra. It's inevitably a mixed bag, partly due to Gennady being a notorious non-rehearser who likes to leave everything to the concert itself, but there are some very good performances mixed in with the less than good ones.

Otherwise there's a good case for single CDs of the various RVW symphonies conducted by those who didn't record complete sets. These range from 'historic' recordings conducted by Goossens (the 'London'); Mitropoulos (No. 4); Koussevitzky (No. 5); Stokowski (Nos. 4, 6 and 9); Munch (No. 8); plus later stereo releases from Bernstein, Berglund and Colin Davis (in No. 4); Barbirolli (No. 5); and Abravanel (No.6). Some single releases from complete cycles stand out too, such as Previn's 'Antartica' and Bryden Thomson in No. 5. Boult's first 'Sea' and 'Pastoral' for Decca are in some listener's opinions better performances than his EMI re-makes but they're both in mono. Having heard Ormandy's wonderful broadcast of RVW's 'Pastoral' on You Tube, it can only be regretted that he didn't record a complete cycle in Philadelphia.

I have the mono Boult Decca set and the Handley stereo set as "go to's". Supplemented with the Barbirollis of 2, 5, 7 & 8. But my fav Sea Symphony is Previn's with Harper & Shirley-Quirk, in spite of the unimpressive sound. Sure wish somebody could fix that. The original master sound HAS to have been better than the compressed stuff that started with the LP (RCA Floppy disc) and seemed to continue with the first CD reissue.

Sure, you can hope.
But is very unlikely.
Previous boxes in this series did not have remastered sound.

Whilst on this topic, I don't ever recall Previn recording Job. Maybe he didn't like the work, but it seems strange. I have the single RCA CDs which contain a lot of fillers. In addition he didn't appear to have recorded the Tallis Fantasia for RCA, but did later for EMI and Telarc.

My thoughts exactly. I once tried compiling a Previn/LSO RCA list and
came up with 23 LPs, plus two more LSO LPs from CBS to make 25. Not an unrealistic number these days for a mega-box. I hadn't caught the Pennario
and Hollander discs with the RPO (thanks for that information). One
could also add Previn's first purely "classical" outing with St. Louis
(Britten & Copland). Towards the end of the list is a Walton Viola
Concerto with Bashmet that MAY have post-dated the LP era and a Previn/
Stoppard piece that MAY have been a UK-only release.
