Richard Caniell has done it again. Well, not just yet: the CD's haven't been manufactured, but five new Toscanini releases are forthcoming. All are 2016 restorations. I placed my pre-order the other day for all of 'em. I transcribed all of the following from PDF's on the Immortal Performances site. You're welcome :-)

"For the 150th anniversary of Toscanini's birth (March 25, 2017) we are publishing the above performances in sound superior to what has been previously available. These albums also include bonus material never before offered."

1. Vivaldi, Mozart, Brahms. Includes interviews, speeches, and Beethoven rehearsal plus separate booklet about Toscanini's influence on non-musicians. NBC Symphony Orchestra. 2 CD's.

2. Wagner: Die Meistersinger, 1937 complete + 1936 Act III scenes. Nissan, Noort, Reining, Wiedemann (1937); Nissen, Kullman, Lehmann, Wiedemann (1936). Vienna State Opera Chorus, Vienna Philharmonic. 5 CD's for the price of 4. [I believe this is the first restoration of this performance since Andante's set over a decade ago.]

3. Verdi: Te Deum, Requiem. Milanov, Björling, Castagna, Moscona, Westminster Choir. NBC Symphony Benefit Concert, November 23, 1940. With original broadcast commentary by Gene Hamilton. Bonus features: Memorial programs: Interviews, WQXR radio broadcast of "The Impact of Toscanini": Chotzinoff. 2 CD's.

Are these offerings on Red Book CD or CD-R? Not explicitly
evident on their web site, or else I missed it.

The Andante sounds pretty good - no, let me rephrase that - it sounds about as good as this very flawed original is likely to sound. I know that for most people, the draw is Toscanini, but I'm not sure how anyone can tell what he's doing through those sonics. The real draw for me is Nissen's Sachs.

Now *this* is worth buying.

"Limited edition"? Limited only by how few people will buy it. Aren't these the same recordings issued by M&A a year or two ago, in new transfers (and IMO, fairly good sound)?:

Everything he and that organization release is cause for celebration and the Toscanini release announcements are always particularly exciting.

The "CD's haven't been manufactured" were shipped on October 8th! Eagerly awaiting the 1935 Deutches Requiem, finally liberated from the NYPL.

Based on past pre-orders I was under the impression they were not yet in physical form. The Dream Ring took a minute, as the kids say, to receive.

I read a review from a reliable critic (Ken Meltzer, who posted here many years ago). He notes that a) the new IP issue contains a fair amount of music that wasn't on the Music and Arts set and that b) the sonics on the new IP issue are substantially better than all previous issues, including the Music and Arts.

Not being a particular fan of Toscanini, I think that I'll remain satisfied with the M&A set, at least for the time being....

You don't get these because you're a Toscanini fan so much as because you're a Beethoven fan.

Or a Gene Hamilton fan, and a National Broadcadting Company fan. With a cool antique Detrola radio to play the discs through. Like moi ;-))

Thanks for the update, Bill and Wagner Fan. I must say, I am really looking forward to the Beethoven set.

In addition to the Naxos and M&A CD issues, I have the original, pathetic Olympic LP set containing the material Olympic stole from Clyde Keys of the Arturo Toscanini Society. The jackets would make interesting wall art to stare at when I listen to the new IP set.

It should be noted that there are two recent, unique Music and Arts reissues of the 1939 cycle, both issued, as was Music and Arts's won't, with an identical catalog number, viz. CD-1203. The 2007 set sported a blue cover, and the 2013 set was gray and orange with "new digital transfers by Aaron Z. Snyder using the revolutionary harmonic balancing process." Notes on the latter set by Christopher Dyment. Has Andrew Rose's Pristine Classics outfit taken on the 1930's Toscanini Beethoven?

I had this set too. I did not tape it, but returned it. It was made from recycled vinyl (remember the oil embargo?) and the bits of paper embedded in the playing surface were too much for me and my Shure.

Mine arrived yesterday!

The "Deutches Requiem" is all I have listened to so far. It is rough in spots, but a wonderful restoration of this 81 year old recording. The Orchestra at times is muffled due to overloading the original recorder, not much you can do about that. Richard Caniel explains all the problems he encountered in the 42 page booklet that accompanies this set.

My parcel has arrived from British Columbia. First audition was Beethoven 7, a very fine interpretation (I have heard it before and it still resonates with me). Then, I played the new Brahms German Requiem. WOW! This is sloooww. Molasses in January slow. Dudamel 2011 Brahms cycle at Disney Hall slow (74 minutes by my count)...but even more so I love it, in spite of the constricted sound and less-than-perfect soloists. Toscanini was special, his climaxes are exciting and he does hold the piece together--something I cannot say for Dudamel's turgid 2011 performance. Looking forward to listening to the rest of Richard Caniell's Made in Canada goodies. (And Donald Trump is against NAFTA. Pffft!!)

I know this is probably a redundant question but why did the Andante pressing of the DIE MEISTERSINGER disappear so quickly? The FALSTAFF is very much available on Amazon, Berkshire and eBay and fairly inexpensive. But the MEISTERSINGER is nowhere - with the exception of obscenely priced used copies.

Don't have an answer to the question about the Andante Meistersinger? It was offered at Berkshire seven years ago, along with a slew of other Andante titles. For whatever reason I passed on it, to my ever-shameful bad fortune. I've been looking for it ever since, for less than a fortnight's wages, that is.

I am presently listening to Ania Dortman's Choral Fantasy in this new Roscanini Beethoven box. Please keep Arri Bachrach 1000 yards away from this disc! The piano is dreadfully tuned. Whoa, Nelly!!
