As part of a nice large collection I received recently (thanks, Mike), I
obtained volumes 3 and 4 of what calls itself The Basic Library of the
World's Greatest Music. A Google search yielded a site selling reissues of
parts of it on CDs with a claim that the notes tell all about the
performers, some links to an antique dealer who is selling volumes of it,
some eBay links to auctions of parts or all of it (see, for example,
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2260700601), and links
that don't pertain to the LP collection.

I'm curious - does anyone know who plays on Scheherazade, Dvorak's 9th
Symphony (here called the 5th, of course, this being from 1958), Prelude to
the Afternoon of a Faun and Les Preludes? Those are what's on these two
volumes, all or in part.

I have a complete set of them. The performances range from wonderful to
laughably inept (e.g., Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto). The first four volumes,
which my parents bought for a buck or two at a supermarket in 1959, were the
spark that ignited my interest in classical music. I literally wore those
records out.

We do offer several sets with music from the "Basic Library". These
include the Scheherazade and Les Preludes (the latter in stereo) among
many other performances from the set. Our notes identify the performers
and reveal the sources of the recordings in this and other anonymous
supermarket series.

Yes, I believe yours was the site I mentioned that had the CD reissues.

The sets were reissues of older recordings. I tracked down the
'Eroica': it's Ignaz Neumark and the Utrecht Symphony, originally
issued on Musical Masterworks Society around 1953.

Wasn't there a lot of Otto Ackermann in the series?

Thank you for identifying this. Someday I look forward to finding out who did
the Schubert Ninth in this set.
