Help please! Does anyone have the recording I'm talking about (the one with
Roberto Michelucci)?
there was an incredible recording of this done in the 60's, on philips, by i
musici.
I think they must have re-recorded it because when I bought the disc, it was
interpreted very differently. The latter was splendid, but there was
"magic" in the first one.
they are different recordings.

I Musici recorded The Four Seasons at least three times: with Ayo in the
60s (the complete Op. 8 on Philips Duo), with Michelucci in the 70s and
with Carmirelli in the early 80s. You can find the Michelucci one from
www.musicexpress.com on a budget Philips disc. Just perform a search
for classical performer with "Michelucci" to find:

I still love I Musici's recordings, especially with Felix Ayo. I still think
their clarity - which is more classical than baroque maybe - is unsurpassed even
though listening to Il Giardino Armonico blew my mind at first hearing and still
does. I can enjoy both approaches.

I know you didn't ask for my two-cents on this, but I couldn't resist: Someone
once handed me a stack of LPs, which had both of these records in it, the Ayo
and the later recording with Michelucci. I listened to both, and, though the
Michelucci was pretty decent, I thought the Ayo was much, much better.
Everything was more lively with Ayo--especially the supportive playing of I
Musici. The rhythms bounced; the melodies were gorgeously shaped. Ayo's sound
seemed more beguiling, sweeter, more passionate than Michelucci's.
Feel free to ignore me if you have your heart set on Michelucci. You don't get
a bad recording if you order it, but I thought it was pale and drab in
comparison to the Ayo.

Of the three, Il Giardino Armonico, Europa Galante, and the English Concert
with Pinnock and Standage, which do you prefer, if you've heard all three?

I heard all three and IGA takes my breath away. I like it much better than
Standage which is more conventional (and a bit *stiff upper lip-ish* maybe) and
also more than Biondi. I read someone (maybe here?) describe IGA as *take no
prisoners* playing and I think that's a very apt term.

Make that at least four times. The early '60s recording with Ayo
was already a stereo re-make of their mono recording (with Ayo)
recording of the mid '50s (ABL 3128 in UK), which I like even
more!
