You'll find both Rosenthal and Igumnov playing the Sonata 3 on Youtube. Hofmann only recorded the first movement. Not sure if there are any other "Golden Age" pianists with recordings available. Just a bit different though not sure if they're "like no other". Igumnov is nice, despite some wrong notes. He also recorded Kreisleriana. Lovely pianist.

Sorry to be a bit in the potato field here, but who's playing?

I’ll guess that it’s a Russian pianist. I’m probably off, but my guess is that the name ends with ‘ov’😀.

I think my tastes in Chopin interpreters leans more towards the less hyper-romantic, caressing and coddling each phrase type of player. At least as much classic straightforwardness as romantic rubato-laden. For the deep-toned, projected to the last row approach, Gilels’ somewhat more reserved performance is as far as I go.

OK. Got it.

I’ll have to check out Zhukov’s recording. I love his Beethoven op. 110 and Rachmaninov Barcarolle.

Phew! Trust restored.

BTW, Dershavina's Stanchinsky is very good. Bought her CD. Thanks!

I listened to Zhukov. He is in a class by himself. When the first movement began I was taken aback by the sadness and resignation that began from the very start. I’ve never heard it done quite like this, but his absolute sincerity made the playing beyond criticism. It’s a riveting performance, utterly unique and great and completely convincing - a tragic take from beginning to end.

Also, another less important point - his handling of inner voices throughout is masterful.

There are two Zhukov recordings. I've always preferred the earlier one (Melodiya, ca. 1980, vinyl only) though haven't heard the 1997 in a long time. If you can deal with FLAC (lossless) files, you can download the Melodiya here:

https://www.mediafire.com/folder/wbj9vy9zyjgzg/Zhukov+Chopin+&+Schumann+Melodiya

Choose "zip" version if tar compression poses problems. This may be somewhere on Youtube, don't know. A lot of people have heard (and liked) my LP transfer. Among them, ADGO, who posted the later one, and who used to post here also. DK's preference, at least long ago, was for the later one.

I’ve not listened to Dan’s uploads yet - thanks for them, and I’m looking forward to hearing them.

But I wanted to say that I’ve really started to enjoy Samson Francois’s recording of the third sonata.

Interesting, for me, it was for the first time that I was convinced by his playing.

I agree that he is a good pianist. And, yes. I am convinced by his playing of this
Saint-Saëns concerto, but if I would be asked whether or not I like his playing,
I do reply, "No, I don't like any of his playing".

Dan, I am not here to argue (or discuss) on my personal tastes.
I don't like Sokolov generally (all his recent DGs and medici.tv
web-streams). For the 3rd Chopin sonata, I accepted his taste,
not I liked his playing. In case of Saint-Saëns, the conditions
and situation are similar.

Clearly, I have never been such and I am never be such; nonesuch (nieko tokio;
in Lithuanian language). That's why I was in r.m.c. and helped Henry Fogel.

All for politics and for reconcililation, which latter credo was stolen by
Hélène Grimaud in this century in her cheap 911 compensation fashion
shows.

We all discuss classical music and whether we like something or not,
which is our "personal tastes." There are no universal absolutes as to
whether a performance is good or not, in everyone's eyes, so anything in
that realm that we have to contribute, can only be our personal tastes.
