A few days ago, I was informed that Sydney Baker, principal trumpet
for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (1941-42, 1946-48) had passed
away after a long illness. He was 88.
A brief summary of his varied career can be found about 3/4 of the way
down the following webpage:

He can be heard on a number of CSO recordings and can be heard on the
Rodzinski/CSO recordings of Zarathustra & Tristan preludes I posted
last January:

In the late 1960s, he was teaching at the High School of Music and Art
in New York. I believe he directed one of the school bands as well as
teaching a music history class I was in. He continued to play
professionally in the Goldman Band and other ensembles.
