Version 4, 10 June 2001
This text lists classical recordings from the LP era that have
never been issued on CD. It has been compiled to draw attention
to important and desirable recordings that remain unavailable in
digital form. For the most part, a recording is included on this
list as a result of discussion by the aficionados in the
newsgroup rec.music.classical.recordings.
Included in this listing:
1. Recordings made during the LP era (ca. 1948-1985) which have
not had commercial reissue on CD.
2. recordings so far reissued only in pirate/private/
noncommercial dubbings from LP's
3. recordings reissued on CD's without global distriution, most
often with distribution restricted to Japan. These are marked
with [Japan], [Australia], etc. where known.
Excluded from this listing:
1. Recordings reissued on CDs generally available at some time in
Europe and/or North America, even if now o.o.p. or only available
for a short period.
2. recordings from the 78 rpm era unless not issued until the LP
era.
I make no pretense of following these guidelines slavishly and
readers will undoubtedly note a few exceptional entries.
Recordings are listed in some cases under the original label of
issue, but in other cases under the label now holding the rights.
========================================================================================
Version 4 of "Locked in the Vaults" incorporates suggestions made
after version 3 was posted to rec.music.classical.recordings.
Within each label, entries are alphabetized by composer, work,
and performer. In some cases, a label's entry begins with a short
list of performers of special interest.
Please address specific *corrections* to Rodger Whitlock at
toto...@mail.pacificcoast.net.
Comments, discussion, and suggestions for additions should be
made in the newsgroup rec.music.classical.recordings
This document may be freely copied online as long as it is not
altered in any way.

Well, it's *only* the entire solo recordings of a very prominent

Just got this reply from Decca:

Does anyone know precisely what Debussy was in that set? If someone can
tell me I can counter the guy with what has _not_ been on CD yet. For
example, have either of the two(?) Pelleases?
re Decca, I would add Mewton-Wood's Schumann Symphonic Studies, which is
_not_ on the new ABC box, alas.
>EMI (including the old Capitol catalogue)
>--------------------------------------------
You could add:
Schoenberg: Piano Works (Jacob). This is a late 50 Ducretet-Thomson
recording which I believe has reverted to EMI France. Let's all pray
Allan Evans can get his hands on it...
>Lyrita
>--------------------------------------------
The guy who owns Lyrita is famously difficult about releasing/licensing
old material. He also owns the rights to the Gulbenkian series published
by Argo, and many 60s contemporary music masters from EMI, alas.

I spoke to the original producer of the Time/Mainstream recordings last
year about their rerelease. Now the masters are (IIRC) owned by the
widow of the sound engineer, who demands exorbitant sums for their
licensing. There have been attempts, but these demands always scupper
them.

Surely this is all on the Hungaraton CD box of Bartók plays Bartók?

Judging by the responses to my recent query in another thread, the
following recording should be added under RCA: Paganini Violin
Concerto No. 1, Caprices Nos. 17 and 21, and Wieniawski Legend - Erick
Friedman/Chicago SO/Walter Hendl (Sir Malcolm Sargent leads one of the
London orchestras in the Legend). I played this LP (I have it on RCA
Victrola) last night, and it is just as good as I remembered. The CSO
has a lot of fun with the Rossinieque accompaniment, too.

One can only hope.
As I have said before, it is notable that Sony is the single
worst offender.

[This version took a long time to format and alphabetize! In the
works for over a month!]
Nor a surprise, I'm afraid. I hope that Steve Smith will mention that too.
You may want to add this to the Locked in the Vaults list. As I dig up
more stuff from my LP collection, I will post a short comment on
unreissued remarkable recordings. I know I have more Matthews
recordings, all very good (memory says).

The best-known of my composition teachers.
What recordings of the Copland are currently available, and worth getting?
There's one out with Cincinnati and Corporon on the
Klavier label that's pretty good. I'm not sure, but
it may be on the EWE disc on Sony taped in Japan.
I really adore his Dvorak Serenade Op 22. So elegaic and sweet.

It was; one of those wretched early Philips NoNoise jobs, long gone.
Surface noise aside, your LP (if you have it) probably sounds better.

They will be in the next version, unless someone manages to pipe
up "they've already been issued on CD."
