Lots of cantata, St. Matthew passion, Easter Oratorio. Keyboard stuff
by James Friskin. Most of these Bach Guild things are pretty good.

Thanks. The Woldike Saint Matthew is certainly worth a buck.

Thanks! Unbelievable for a buck...once again.

I grew up on the Woldike St Matt.

Friskin utilizes a piano, not a harpsichord, correct?

These Big Box bargains are amazing. I've got my iPhone loaded with a
bunch of them for flights I'm taking in about two weeks. Bach, Handel,
Beethoven, Vivaldi in Big Boxes, Johann Strauss, etc. from others.
I've probably got 4 days-worth of music on my phone. Who woulda thunk
it 5 years ago?

Coincidentally, I just listened to the Wldike St. Matthew Passion this
morning, albeit on a Vanguard CD. It really is a wonderful performance,
and the singing, particularly from the chorus, is of a sort one no
longer really hears.

Looking at my iTunes, it seems I've splurged for the Brahms, Schubert,
Christmas, and I guess what now will be referred to as the "little" Big
Bach Box. $4 for a week or so of continuous music, and almost a
no-brainer to buy.

The final chorus in the Woldike is overwhelming. It's a very
objective, rather detached performance all told with a very powerful
cumulative effect. The solo singing is variable - Rossl-Majdan is
superb, Stich-Randall sings in that vibratoless way you either love or
not, and Hans Braun is muddy and dull. The sound on the LPs and CDs is
wonderful Wagner Fan

The Goldberg variations in this set has 31 variations vs. the usual
30!

Looks they forgot that the 1st track is the Aria and "made up" an
extra variation at the end. All the other usual movement titles are
shifted by one.

I agree - at least about the Blum recordings, which are virtually
impossible to find on CD.

Here's hoping there will be a further Haydn Symphony box that will include the rest of the Woldike London Symphonies.
