What do you think is the best recording of the Grieg Conerto?
I have heard that the Rubinstein, Perahia, and Lupu performances are
very good, but there might be a 'definitive' recording that I don't
know about etc.

I think I accidentally posted this as the Schumann Concerto but I
can't see because Google is so damn slow. Anyway, as they often come
together in CDs you can give me your opinions on both :P

Thanks

The english spelling is: Kjell Baekkelund. You almost had it!

I would like to recommend another renowned (correct use?) norwegian pianist:
Leif Ove Andsnes (www.andsnes.com)
with the Bergen Philharmonic conducted by Dmitri Kitayenko. Beautifully
played!

There IS no best recording of the Grieg. It's such a horrible concerto
that no one can play it so it's worth hearing.

My opinion only, of course. :-)

I didn't care that much for the Grieg Concerto until I got ahold of a
pirate recording of Michelangeli / De Burgos - this performance changed
the way I felt about the Grieg forever - that's how transcendental this
reading is. The famous Michelangelian cool is shed - perhaps thanks to
Burgos.

By this way, this was recorded 3 years after the BBC performance. It's
inferior in sound, but the performance is much greater.

My references are all mono:

Lipatti/Galliera (EMI)
Michelangeli/Galliera (Teldec)
Arrau/Galliera (Testament)

I guess Old Alceo owned this concerto. :-)

Curzon/Fjelstad on Decca is also good (and in stereo).

Serge,

Mine too. Very few talk about it, I was wondering about that as well.
Kovacevich satisfies me for the moment. Perahia and Lupu do not,
mainly because of the sound. Just my taste.

Katchen very exciting, this is very American (or is it Richter-like
Russian?!) playing, takes this concerto into the virtuoso realm. Risk
taking by the wagonload, all of which come off, as the programme note
so perceptively tells us.

I only heard it on LP along with some rare Grieg.

My questions are:
1) Do you know of any CD reissues,
2) Have you compared to the much praised Andnes? Is it because he is
Norwegian or because he plays it with as much brio and singing tone as
Katchen?

Some very interesting recommendations. I've not heard many recordings of
this piece, since it has never really "grabbed" me.

What is the general consensus in this NG over Leon Fleischer. I have an old
LP with Leon playing Grieg and Schumann. Any opinions? (Silly question.)

The Grieg is a rare miss by this duo - it seems completely unsympathetic to
Grief's idiom. The Schumann OTOH is very fine.

The best Grieg concerto I know is Rubinstein/Wallenstein, the stereo version.

I think it's very good; two great Beethoven performers (three, if you count

I had all these Fleisher/Szell recordings--Beethoven, Brahms,
and Schumann/Grieg--on LP. The Odyssey LP of the
Grieg/Schumann was a popular introductory LP for my
little group of college friends discovering classical music.
It also had a beautiful cover, as did many Odyssey LPs
from the period (early '70s). Natural scenes, this one of
a white bird flying over a lake, as I recall.

This coupling on CD is on one of those irregularly released "Portrait"
discs. Probably hard to find.

I now have all the CDs, but I think the Brahms ctos are the best
of the Fleisher/Szell collaboration. The Beethoven ctos have
always had bad, hissy sound (meanwhile, the same company
achieved much better engineering results in NYC, LA, and
Philadelphia with Bernstein, Walter, and Ormandy respectively).

And as I have remarked before, surprisingly enough, the Brahms
"Masterworks Heritage" release has photos of the young Fleisher with
cigarette in hand, a triumph over political correctness. In yet another
triumph on this matter, the NBC show "American Dreams", set in
the early '60s, shows teenage girls smoking. The current movie
"Far from Heaven" shows cigarettes all over the place, whereas
Spielberg's "Saving Private Ryan", incredibly, showed only one
or two in a WWII saga. I am wondering about Spielberg's new
movie, set in the early '60s and supposedly replete with
"authentic" touches.

I really should find a '50s/'60s ng for this kind of thing....

Hi,

The best that I have ever heard is on 5-23-12 at Fisher Hall, by Evgeny Kissin with the NYPO. I do not know if it is available on the NYPO web site.

Not just your opinion, sir, I can't stand the piece - there's something so effete and downright prissy about it. There are a few things by Grieg I do enjoy (surprisingly, one in particular is the Quartet #2 in F Major, whose two final movts were completed by Röntgen), but spare me the Concerto. I do own two versions of it, Fleisher/Szell and Cziffra/Vandernoot, but only because of their couplings. Quite reluctant to clutter up my collection with yet a 3rd version, but Lipatti's is c/w an authentic Chopin #1.

I have an aversion to the Tchaikovky PC #1. However I wouldn't use
the words effete and prissy for it. Trashy, vulgar, lacks thematic
development, seem more appropriate for that work. At least we don't
have a major piano competition in which how well you play the Grieg
concerto is an important factor.

I’ll mention again that the Michelangeli/ Burgos live recording actually changed my mind about the Grieg Concerto.

Also, I never liked the Grieg Piano Sonata until hearing Alicia De Larrocha’s recording.

Is there a general consensus that the Ballade is Grieg's most
important contribution to the literature for the piano?

My favorite is the Lilya Zilberstein/Neeme Jarvi/Gothenburg Symphony recording on DG. Beautiful sound and a stunning adagio.

Try Solomon' Grieg/Schumann on EMI 1956 stereo.

Seconded - Andsnes' recording with Kitayenko has been my favorite for a long time now. His second recording with the Berlin Philharmonic is excellent too, but I prefer the earlier one (coupled with an equally fantastic Liszt 2nd piano concerto).

Outside of Andsnes, I also like Freire/Kempe quite a lot.

I LOVE Lylia Zilberstein's recording of the concerto. It's true that I first knew the concert with her recording when I was like 12, so it's stuck with me: anything that sounds different it's simply too much or too little, you know that feeling with recordings. So I'm biased and aware that it might not be the best, but if you don't know it you can have a listen. I wish I could forget everything and start to discover this concerto again hehe but I really enjoy it anyway since I love the piece and the recording is very satisfying for me.
