I have been listening to a lot of Schumann lately, but don't have any
discs of his Lieder. Since I don't listen to Lieder very often in
general, I am more interested in single CDs than in box sets. What
would be your recommendations if only allowed one disc of Schumann
lieder?
Thanks.

And if you *are* MP3 averse, it's also available at BRO:

You might consider this disk...

Arkiv gives it a rave 10/10. I learned to sing "Widmung" (not very well)
from this recording.

The CDs from Peter Schreier are all excellent -- the one with
Liederkreis Op 24 is a good place to start.
The set of duets with Christoph Eschenbach, Peter Schreier, Dietrich
Fischer-Dieskau and Julia Varady. I see this is now available again.
The CD with the Kerner Lieder with Christopher Eschenbach
Fischer-Dieskau's Schumann Op.39 Liederkreis from Salzburg (Orfeo).
Kathleen Ferrier's Frauenliebe und Leben (London/Decca).
Charles Panzera and Alfred Cortot in Dichterliebe
Other interesting Dichterliebes from Vickers and Finley.

While chiming in with many of the other posters (Fischer-Dieskau/
Demus, Souzay, Munteanu, Panzera...), I'd like to mention the disc
that though isn't my absolute favourite of the cycle now, got me
hooked on Lieder in general. Bostridge's Schumann cycles on EMI, one
his early recordings.

I second Bill's and Wayne's endorsement of the two Christian Gerhaher
Schumann lieder discs. He's as good as they come in 2010, IMO. His
recent Mahler disc is fantastic, too.

Although op.48 and op.39 are probably the best cycles, don't overlook
op.24 (Heine settings, a precursor of Dichterliebe) and the Kerner
settings op.35 (Pregardien/RCA is very good, also Fi-Di from the
1950ties or 60ties). I also like the Andersen settings op.40(?) with two
rather "Mahlerian" songs, "Der Soldat" and "Der Spielmann".

Assuming you mean the Op. 39 Liederkreis and not Op. 24, FiDi redid those
with Eschenbach in the mid-'70s, and the CD containing both cycles, plus
"Myrten," is worth seeking out if you like his vocal state in those years.
The readings with Demus I used to have on LP, a long time ago, and I wouldn't
fault you if you prefer the freshness of his voice in those days.

Yes I have the later versions as well but I think the vocal freshness of the
of the 1965 versions suit the cycle better - it was one of my first Lieder
LPs. I have the Dichterliebe on CD on DG as part of the Fischer-Dieskau
edition partnered with first time on CD Schumann Lieder with Weissenborn.

There are some Schumann recordings that I am quite curious about and
I'm wondering if anyone knows them - before I plunge in. They are:

Souzay's late (1950s) Dichterliebe with Cortot. Is it available
anywhere? What is it like?
Fassbaender's Schumann and Mendelssohm disc. on EMI.
Goerne's Schumann discs with Schneider
Margaret Price's Schumann discs on Hyperion with Graham Johnson
Gerhaher's recordings with Hueber.

And the Pre-war German singers. People like Karl Erb and Leo Slezak.
Have their Schumann recordings ever been collected together?

If you're limiting yourself to a single disc, then I would suggest you
pick up Fritz Wunderlich's Dichterliebe. The commercial recording on
DG Originals from 1965 also contains music of Schubert & Beethoven
( http://www.amazon.com/Schumann-Dichterliebe-Wunderlich-Giesen-Robert/dp/B000001GXG
). Wunderlich - or any tenor, for that matter - has the advantage of
singing these songs in the keys in which they were written. The
baritone keys in this cycle radically alter the tone and mood of the
piano part. Wunderlich's voice is perfectly suited to this music. He
has style, grace, sweetness of tone and power when needed.

I forgot this one:

It's OOP, but used copies aren't hard to find, and Hagegard's high
baritone is ideal for these songs.

But his hair is original!
And he has a sort of half-smirk,
half-frown on his face.

In any case, many musicians
include photos of themselves
on the front cover....

Is it taking attention away from
the composer/music to do so....

I'm not sure whether it's available right now but you can spare yourself
a big disappointment by not buying it. Most peculiar for Souzay at this
early stage of his career, he had a terrible off day and it's painful to
hear him sing here. I wonder why this recording was ever issued. It's
the more a pity because it would have made marvelous to compare it to
Panzra/Cortot had Souzay been his normal self.

These are all highly recommended IMO.

Not that I know of. I'm not sure if either of them recorded much
Schumann (I do remember Erb singing Mondnacht - from op.39) but most
probably others here are more knowledgeable about this.
Both do fantatstic in Schubert, I feel but that's beside the point.

Thanks.

I have just been listening to Kipnis and Hotter in Schumann.

It would be great if someone collected together these old recordings.

Mind you, we'd end up with a CD with 10 performances of Mondnacht!

First and foremost, I find any Schumann recording with Wunderlich to be the highest mark of quality.
After that: https://www.amazon.de/Frauenliebe-Leben-Brigitte-Fassbaender/dp/B00000E325 is excellent.
