A nice box. I noticed it does not include the complete releases in these great series.

Now *that* is a great box. Too bad that I already own everything in it
that I want. It's a steal for anyone who doesn't.

I'd say that about half of it is desert-island stuff and half is "so
what/not again," but overall the box is still a bargain, esp. for
newbies. Are all the missing items vocal? Bidu Sayao, George London, the
Barber/Copland/Thomson CD featuring Leontyne Price and William Warfield,
Lenya sings Weill, Eileen Farrell, and Paul Robeson come immediately to
mind. A lot of fine recordings not frequently re-re-issued, iow. Perhaps
they'll be repackaged separately?

Yes I think the vocal ones are missing only: apart from the ones you mentioned, the Steber/Berlioz/Mitropoulos, the Gerswhin set and the Opera one.

The Szell/Strauss and the 3 orchestras brass section Gabrielli is also missing.

Has anyone mentioned the Mitropoulos Wozzeck?

I've had this thought before, and am by no means picking on the two
people whose posts are quoted above, but: in what sense does this
constitute a "great box"? Even if every recording in it is great/desirable
(I have no idea, but am happy to concede the possibility), doesn't
the adjective "great" modifying "box" require some kind of unifying
theme -- a commonality of composers, style, artists, or something
else? I'm probably being overly old-fashioned about this. (And on
a more practical level, where would one file such a boxc?)

It's great because the recordings packaged in the box are mostly great.
Some are spectacular.

The unifying theme is the Sony Masterworks Heritage Series, possibly the
best reissue series of the past 20 years. There have been a number
of label/issue-themed boxes over the past few years: MLP, Decca,
Philips, RCA Living Stereo, etc.

I'm probably being overly old-fashioned about this. (And on

Perhaps with your other omnibus boxes - those listed above, along with
orchestral commemorative boxes, Great Pianists, Great Conductors, etc.
This is not a concern for me anymore as I've explained many times over.

As a theme for a box, however? I think that's what Kurt Vonnegut would have
termed a granfalloon.

I know. That's why I said that I haad the same thought before. I don't
really get it.

But I don't have any of those other sets. :) [And at least something
like "Great Pianists" does have a unifying concept.]

Indeed.

It's a "great box" because it's cheap, will sell, and contains many
great recordings.

You don't actually find that surprising, do you?
