I was browsing Amazon.com for recordings by Krips, and came upon a listing of a recording of the Schubert "Ninth" Symphony performed by the Vienna Philharmonic and conducted by Krips. I went to Amazon Music to listen to it, and found that it was a stereo studio recording. As we know, Krips' much-beloved and celebrated recording of the symphony is with the London Symphony, and a commercial recording with the WP never took place. I take it as a simple mark of negligence by the opportunistic Alexander Bak of "Classical Music Reference Recording." Before posting a comment to that effect ADC, however, I thought I would seek confirmation from a board of experts.

There is virtually identical artwork on Spotify for the same tracks, but the cover says "LSO".

I refrained from writing something equally negative. Tonally beautiful, the self-serious weight of the approach is lethal to all that I currently value in it. I prefer something more spontaneous-sounding and happy. Call me superficial.

I've too have never understood why this recording has such a reputation.

Thanks for the heads-up on this recording, which I had no idea about, and what a splendid performance it is. The introduction to the first movement is a lot heavier than we're used to these days but that hardly typifies the whole performance. Perhaps that's when its present critics switched off?

Some might prefer this mono version of a few years earlier:

Odd (?) that the Beethoven 4 is in the Decca "Mono Years" collection, but the Schubert isn't.

They changed it from London Symphony Orchestra to Vienna Philharmonic to avoid using the "L" word.

Too late! I bought the LSO recording as a download last night. Great stuff.
I think the confusion over the orchestra may have arisen from the way it was at various times coupled with Krips's account of the 'Unfinished' which *was* with the Vienna Philharmonic.
I used to hear quite a lot of music on the radio conducted by Josef's younger brother Henry, who for many years conducted the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra in South Australia, not a demanding task in those days. The story goes that at one time Josef himself came to Adelaide to conduct, and was astonished to see that the scores he had been given had the first violin part underlined in red. So of course he asked the orchestra who was the last person to have used them? After a short period of embarrassment somebody - probably in the brass section - found the courage to tell the maestro that they were his brother's. "Ach," said Josef, "poor Henry! He is so *y-o-u-n-g*..."

Here it is again with the Decca 'Eloquence' cover illustrated in the video. This shows the Schubert 8th as being played by the VPO and the 9th by the LSO. This is just the first movement marked 'Andante - Allegro ma non troppo' ... Krips' idea of the opening is more of an Adagio than an Andante ...

There are several more YouTube uploads of this recording, all stating LSO.
