In browsing gramophone.net, I came across the following passage in
last August's issue:
In an Albert Hall concert in 1963, the two Oistrakhs, Yehudi
Menuhin and Kyrill Kondrashin rotated conducting and playing duties
between them, and the evening included a sublime rendition of the
Beethoven Concerto, played by Menuhin and conducted by David Oistrakh.
Lifelong concert-goer and British Prime Minister Sir Edward Heath
described that performance as "the finest and most memorable I have
ever heard.. .It was an experience not just for that evening, but one
that will remain with me for the rest of my life". He was visibly
touched when I presented him with a recording of that "gig" on a trip
to Hong Kong. "Ah," he said, "I never thought I would hear that
again..."
Doesn't that sound enticing? Does anyone know whether this
recording has ever been generally available?

I was present at this concert which I believe was on September 24 1962 at
the Albert Hall.
As I remember it, Menuhin played the Beethoven Violin Concerto. His palying
was so wonderful that at the end, there was only silence until the audience
recovered itself.
Menuhin and David Oistrakh played Mozart Sinfonia Conertante
and to cap it off David, Igor Oistrakh and Menuhin played Vivaldi's Triple
Violin Concerto.

If anybody has any memories of this and can confirm my own memories, I would
be grateful.

I just acquired and listened to a *1963* recording on BBC Legends 4019 of
the VC with Menuhin playing, conducted by David Oistrakh. I'd rather the
roles were reversed, actually. The performance didn't grab me on first
listening. I'll give it another go. (OTOH, I listened to the Neveu/Rosbaud
Beethoven VC (Hanssler incarnation) the other day and was quite moved. Also
on the CD is the Sinfonia Concertante, conducted by Menuhin and played by D
& I Oistrakh. No Vivaldi on that CD, but another BBC CD has the Vivaldi.
I think this CD came with Gramophone. You might find it on Ebay or Amazon.
BBC 4019 should be easy to find.
