ACOUSTIC CHAMBER MUSIC
SETS
compiled by Frank Forman
SCOPE
A set is anything more than one record. I use the most
expansive definition possible and include:
1. Three-sided works in two-disc sets with fillers
2. Abridged recordings
3. Incomplete recordings
4. Solo instrumental [violin, viola, and piano found so far]
5. Non-chamber music played in chamber music
transcriptions, and
6. Chamber music played by larger ensembles [none found
so far].
* means in my collection
# = long-playing 33 1/3 rp.m. disc
Ť = compact disc
Matrix numbers, where known, are in italics and precede the
record manufacturer and catalog numbers.
Recording dates are often conjectured.

Trio in C, Op. 87: Adagio; Minuet; Allegro. Henri Lefebvre,
clarinet; Louis Bas, oboe; Ernest Vizentini, bassoon.
1907. 7340/41/39o. Zonophone.X 88028/29/32. Sides
1 and 2 also issued on G.238014/5. All issues are French
single-faced.
ditto. Gewandhaus Quintet, Leipzig members: Carl Bartuzat,
flute; Willi Schreinicke, clarinet; Günther Weigelt,
bassoon. P.66203/4
Note: The identification of these two recordings with Op. 87
is tentative, not having heard the discs. My catalogs give
the French recording as merely "Trio" and the German
recording as "Trio in C". The original work is scored for
two oboes and English horn, and its movements are 1,
Allegro; 2, Adagio cantabile; 3, Menuetto. Allegro molto.
Scherzo; and 4. Finale. Presto. The work was composed
in 1794 but first issued in 1806 April. Simrock published
an arrangement in 1806/7 for two oboes or clarinets and
bassoon, which is perhaps what was used in the two
recordings. The sole electric recording of the work in
WERM, which uses the original instrumentation, occupies
six sides.

BLISS, Arthur Edward Drummond (1891-1975) England
Conversations (1919) [3 sides]. The Composer, directing a
chamber group consisting of (with first performers in
parentheses): flute (also bass flute) (Gordon Walker),
oboe (also English horn) (Leon Goossens), violin (Charles
Woodhouse), viola (Raymond Jeremy), cello (Cedric
Sharpe). These are quite likely the performers on the
discs. 1923. 76871/2/3. C.L 1475/6A. Voices of the
Past says "Bliss/Sym. Orch," but WERM says
"Quintet■Bliss." Filler is Bliss: Madam Noy (A Witchery)
(1918), for soprano, flute, clarinet, bassoon, viola, bass,
and harp. 1923. 76874. Anne Thursfield, soprano, with
"Orch," acc. to Voices of the Past, but WERM says "A.
Thursfield & Sextet," which is prob. correct.
