Just made an attempt to visit this perenially useful store (url:
Musicexpress.com), which offered lots of Europe-only issues for sale to
the U.S. with flat-rate shipping of $5. Gone. One gets redirected to the
"sister store," CDconnection, which has its uses as well, but is much
shorter on imports; being U.S.-located.

Unfortunate.

Yes, but their selection was idiosyncratic, and their search engine
awful. Shipping was pretty reasonable, though.

Lately, I've been surprisingly happy getting some of my German CD's
from, of all places, HMV Japan. The selection is excellent and the
prices pretty reasonable; shipping is expensive, but not much more so
than from Germany, and as long as you order a few things, it isn't
prohibitive. And they are fast; I placed an order on a Monday and
received it the following Saturday.

I always found musicexpress to be prohibitively expensive.

That was among the reasons I stopped ordering from them several years
ago - I could always find the same items cheaper elsewhere.

When only one or two things were desired, I found them very economical;
the least expensive option out there. Too, the shipment arrived in a
week. In marked contrast with JPC and Amazon.de. This was because
Musicexpress shipped from the Netherlands and did not use Deutsche Post.

The search engine was fine for my purposes; I knew what I was looking
for and could find it by inserting two names.

Those unenthusiastic about Musicexpress -- what source do you use for
German releases and how are the shipping times and rates?

Thx,
SE.

All true, but I found more than one recording there that I hadn't
managed to find anywhere else.
