OMG.

"Sony Classical is now proud to present his entire Columbia discography
together for the first time in a single release of 77 CDs, with his
complete stereo recordings newly remastered from the original analogue
tapes and many early recordings new to CD. "

Good question! The first Szell Italian in the "complete" box did not have the original versions of the last two movements recorded in 1947, but the 1951 remakes, which I suppose made the Szell box not truly complete. Never have known why they were redone. Damaged lacquer maybe?

We will have to wait and see about Walter. Apparently the finale was redone due to sonic problems. Mack Harrell carried over from the original 1949 cast. Interesting the same group and chorus in 1953 also recorded the Bruckner Te Deum with Walter, still my favorite version just for the brassy jollity of Walter's direction. Both pieces recorded the same day. Bet that was some work!

From the track listing, it looks like CD 14 has the pure 1949 version and CD 19 has the composite 1949/53 version.

In this case, I wish I'd procrastinated even though I love Bruno Walter. I bought the 39CD Edition that Sony released a few years ago in that hideous LP sized box. Clumsy packaging. Still, the items new to the announced set are of enough interest I'll probably buy that and give away or donate the old set.

The only price of seen is 300 Euros which is about $340. I suppose
we'll see lower prices and all the price jockeying we've seen before.
Even so, that's around $4.40 per CD which is pretty good.

The Szell collection seems to have become scarce and expensive again.

Excellent News, though like Hank I do feel somewhat abused by Sony.
I wonder if they will now finally get around to giving us the "Complete Leonard Bernstein Album Collection" in new remasterings (or at least remaster everything not remastered in the past ten years by Andreas K. Meyer).

I'm sure it will sell for considerably less once it appears. This is just the first mention that we know of. I think most of us bought the Szell box for under $200 and that contained 106 discs versus 77 in the Walter box.

It's shocking to me that the Szell box already appears to be out of print since it was only released five months ago. Is this a sign that the labels are doing ever smaller print runs and we need to act fast?

I've been predicting a Complete Leonard Bernstein Album Collection for at least 5 years now, although my prediction told of it arriving in time for the great man's centenary which has now passed. However, note that there _was_ a Bernstein CD box issued in time (October 2017) for his centenary celebration: Leonard Bernstein Remastered https://amzn.to/2W2PxGk a 100 CD set. Not all his recordings, just a sampling. All of its contents were remastered from original sources.

In his typically thorough review on Mackenzie Bezos's Ama zon, rmcr's own, the indefatigable John Fowler, reports that:

<< 75 of the 232 compositions in the new box are recycled from four earlier boxes:
—2009: Mahler: The Complete Symphonies: Symphonies 2, 3, 6 & 9 are recycled in the new box.
—2015: Bernstein Sibelius - Remastered: Symphony 5, Pohjola's Daughter & Violin Concerto + Grieg's Peer Gynt Suites are recycled in the new box.
—2017: Leonard Bernstein - The Composer: Eighteen Bernstein compositions are recycled in the new box (discs 1, 2, 17, 20, 24, 45, 50, 54, 90, 91, 98, 99, 100). Not carried over are "Mass", some piano works & songs, and the stereo recordings of Symphony 2 & the Serenade for Violin. The earlier box also included three Broadway original cast recordings not conducted by Bernstein. Surprisingly, all are carried over to the new box.
—2017: New York Philharmonic 175th Anniversary: 54 of 83 Bernstein-conducted selections from the 175th Anniversary collection are recycled in the new box. >>

And did you notice that Sony just issued last September the third and final volume of its LP-sized 12" x 12" Leonard Bernstein Edition: The Vocal Works? (Same format and graphic design as 2013 Bruno Walter Edition.) The first set, The Symphony Edition, was issued in November 2010 (time flies) and has sold over 18,000 copies. It was out-of-print for 4 years or so and was commanding impressive prices from second-hand sellers. It was reissued sometime in the past year. The second volume, Concertos and Orchestral Works, was issued in October 2014. It is OOP. All the recordings on these sets are _not_ remastered and have masterings that date to the Royal Edition (Prince Charles watercolor covers) or even older.

So what I'm trying to say is: the news of this new Bruno Walter Complete Columbia Collection almost certainly bodes well for my prediction. A massive Leonard Bernstein Complete Columbia Collection is a lock. When? Only Robert Russ knows for sure.

JPC has an expected release date of June 28 for the Walter box. It also
says if they lower the price prior to the release you will get the lower
price. Not sure how JPC's regular prices compare to others. My
recollection from years ago is that they were more expensive than
average, but that if they listed something they actually had it, as if
they had their own inventory.

Sony also went to a second production run for the 60 CD Bernstein Symphony Edition, at least in Europe.
It was first issued in 2010, then went out-of-print five years later and became prohibitively expensive for several years, until it was re-pressed in September 2018. Now listed on Amazon UK for £81.80 (ASIN: B003Z9Q4WG). For some reason, US Amazon has not yet received the second production run and is currently selling the box for $329.99.

Agreed. I already have the 39 CD Bruno Walter Edition on Sony as well

the question for me will be whether the additional items in the new box
and any improved remastering are enough to justify the price (whatever

The question is whether you can resist the slight improvements and collection triplication or quadrication when it only costs $120. I'm certain we'll see it at that price.

Yes, I do. If a concensus of opinion says that the mastering is superb and a huge improvement, I will take my chance. As it is, I have nearly all of Walter's important recordings on single CDs. Beethoven, Mahler, Bruckner, Mozart, Wagner, Dvorak, etc. With regard to performance, I am less likely to rely on concensus before buying.

In short, I have never bought blind, with a few exceptions.

One of the exceptions in the days of LP was Supraphon. I bought blind because I knew the product would be good. And invariably it always was, despite some criticism of reverberation common with many Supraphons.

The first Bruno Walter recording I ever heard was his 1940's version of Beethoven's 5th Symphony (from a 78RPM set I found in my grandmother's basement). I remember the cover featured a capital V and its Morse Code equivalent: three dots and a dash. A fiery performance.

I tend to be very skeptical of such a "consensus". I think that people, including myself, have a tendency to exaggerate minute differences in transfer quality to justify products that they've already purchased.

Perhaps, but people hear differently also. I'm virtually deaf in one
ear and probably have normal high frequency loss for a 71 year old in
the other, so subtle improvements will not likely interest me. There's
also the "collecting" thing. Like a preference for the albums and their
artwork of the original releases over faceless box sets.

The few Walter recordings that have been remastered since the Edition over 25 years ago--couple of Bruckner Symphonies, Lied von der Erde, Schubert and some Beethoven--were all audible improvements on their predecessors, which in most cases were good, except for the Mahler, which seems to be a sonic problem child. I just hope they spruce up some of the older masters also. Those late 78 and early lp Schubert, Dvorak, and Brahms, many of them issued by Sony in France, need it.

YES!!! the last remastering of the BW Stereo Mahler's was AWFUL. Too much MGM Technicolor and artificial instrumental balances applied to the recordings, while the monos were fine. Have to hope that they fixed that rather than continuing to follow that example. just cannot throw out a few hundred $ on a chance of improvement. Hopefully Presto will have digital hi-res downloads as they did with a bunch of the Szell discs. But I will miss the fancy packaging and doco.

If you are referring to the Danish site linked above, the price there is 2199.95 Danish Krone, which is about 295 euros or US $330; JPC Germany's current price is 299 euros or about $334. All at today's exchange rates.

I wouldn't call myself a fan of Leinsdorf, but I am thinking seriously about ordering this box.
I was in high school 1963-67.
Everything was Bernstein, Karajan and Ormandy.
I didn't have time for Leinsdorf.
(later in the decade I went to college and discovered Bruno Walter, Otto Klemperer and George Szell).
This may be a good time for a re-evaluation of Leinsdorf, especially if Sony cleans up the sound.
Leinsdorf's career suffered more from Dynagroove than any other RCA artist.

Another missing item is the Los Angeles Philharmonic Sheffield Lab direct-to-disc LP of Prokofiev excerpts from "Romeo and Juliet." This was a companion disc to the 1977 Wagner LP, which IS mentioned, and along with which it was reissued as a 2LP set (that number appears in the Wagner listing of the discography).

There are numerous Leinsdorf pre-RCA recordings included in the Korean 40 cd box available on the Artis label from HMV Japan. The box also incudes the mid 1950s Mozart Symphony cycle, which I think is pretty good.

FWIW, the Artis box includes all the items previously mentioned as being
missing from the discography. It appears the Sheffield recordings are
not included.

No Walter box visible at any N American site- hard for me to believe this is seeing release any time soon. The Danish site that said October might be correct.

Where'd you see the Leinsdorf box cover art?

The initial prices listed for these sets tend to be higher than the actual retail prices at the point of release. I think of these as "token" prices. This happened on multiple sights with the significantly smaller Fricsay and Jochum DG dual box sets. Even Sony's two recent Juilliard String Quartet boxes and the soon to be issued New Music String Quartet set on the same label have been treated this way. It's reasonable to assume that the Walter set will be less expensive by its October 18th release date.

So if I pre-order this set from jpc and later the price drops, will I be charged with the lower price? I know Amazon would do that for pre-orders if there is an adjustment in price before release.

I ordered the Bruno Walter box (77 CDs) from German Amazon on July 19.
The actual price on my invoice is lower than listed on the website (no value added tax?)

Item Subtotal: EUR 194.87
Delivery and Handling: EUR 3.60
Order Total: EUR 198.47

€198.47 = $222.68 ($2.89 per CD)
I paid with Mastercard and can cancel without penalty anytime until the day before.

This box is not yet listed on Amazon UK or Amazon France or Amazon US.
I will monitor them to see if they post lower prices, but that seems unlikely.

The set will be Original Jackets. Sony's procedure has been to use the best existing transfer for those recordings already issued on CD, and new remastering only if the recording has never been issued on CD.

The collection has been listed on Amazon US. Price is presently $222.
Still not listed on Amazon UK. Usually I'd be confident that the best price would be from a US source, but if the UK pound takes a hit at the end of October, that could be a good option for US buyers, too.

I just discovered a recording missing from the JPC.de list:
The 1955 mono Schubert Symphony 5 with the Columbia Symphony (New York edition).
It was issued on LP coupled with the 1955 Schubert Rosamunde excerpts.
Since this is an "Original jacket" collection I would expect them to be on the same disc, but Rosamunde is listed on disc 35 coupled with the 1954 Brahms double concerto with Stern, Rose & the New York Philharmonic.
I assume this is a typo.
Has anyone seen a more up-to-date listing than JPC.de?

The 1960 stereo Schubert 5th with the Columbia Symphony (LA edition) is on disc 5.

The listing on the bottom of the box, shown on the Amazon UK link, has the mono Schubert 5th on CD 35 coupled with the Brahms Double. Would both of those *and* the Rosamunde Excerpts fit on one disc? Maybe, and Sony just didn't have room to list it in the space they had on the bottom (just like they had to leave off one of the four singers in the 1949 Beethoven 9th listing because they wouldn't all fit).

Thanks for this information.
I really wish Sony would re-couple these more compactly - ie the mono Schubert Symphony 5 & Rosamunde could be coupled with the mono Schubert Symphony 8 from Philadelphia.

It looks like they were trying to couple them in chronological order of release, so the two Philadelphia recordings are together on CD 3. (But that doesn't explain the 1954 Mozart "Prague" sharing CD 6 with the 1945 "Jupiter".)

Thank you to Invocation - This list is far more detailed (it's at the bottom of Tower Records' webpage.

I did note two recouplings that make sense:
CD 4: The 1945 Mendelssohn MSND scherzo is coupled with the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto (Milstein) from the same session.
CD 10: The 1941 Dvorak Slavonic Dance is coupled with the 1947 Dvorak Symphony 8.

CD 8: Schumann Symphony 3 and Smetana Moldau (both 1941) are coupled, which makes sense alphabetically.
Actually, I wish these big boxes were packaged alphabetically (or chronologically) by composer instead of in order of release date (you could still have modified original jackets).

NEWS ABOUT REMASTERING THE NEW BRUNO WALTER COLLECTION FROM ANDREAS K. MEYER
Translated from German into Japanese into English

Remastering Stereo Recording
In this remastering, all of the original analog 3-track masters in New York's studios are kept in a vast tape archive in the mountains of Pennsylvania under strict temperature and humidity control. After carefully repairing an extremely delicate analog tape, we carefully played back and picked up the sound under optimal conditions, and remixed it into stereo. Since the legendary remastered CD that John McClure was involved with in the early days of the CD, there have been at least two new remasters during the CD era. Remixes that emphasized the woodwind part), and the low-pitched, bright sound was recognized as a characteristic of Walter-Columbian sound. However, what is actually recorded in the master is a calm sound with a low center of gravity, and it can be said that it is a heavy European sound that Walter aimed. In this remastering, I listened to and compared these past LP masters and CDs, and put effort into reproducing the sound recorded on this original master without damaging it. It is usually released as a CD for international projects and as a hybrid disc in Japan.

Another part of a translation:

" In this box, as a joint project with Sony Music in Japan, all of these stereo recordings were remixed and remastered from the original analog master, not the sound of the waist that was familiar with LPs and CDs so far, This is probably the first time you can hear the calm and magnificent sound of Walter-oriented European style with a low center of gravity."

Wouldn't the sound of the waist be a low center of gravity? I know mine sure is.

Despite the unintentional humor,
This is actually very good news.
Sony appears to have put considerable thought into remastering these recordings.
I am no longer resentful about having to replace my old CDs from the previous edition.
