I've only listened to it once. Based on that, I'd say it's terrific. It's
not the most extroverted recording out there, but Mullova plays beautifully
and has an absolutely exquisite sense of phrasing and timing. Anyone who
thinks that a period instrument with gut strings and a baroque bow can't
produce ravishing sounds should definitely listen to this.
There's a YouTube video that will give you a sense of what to expect in
terms of Mullova's interpretation, although there she's playing a standard
violin (or at least with a standard bow):

You can also hear free samples of the Onyx recording here:
http://www.onyxclassics.com/cddetail.php?CatalogueNumber=ONYX4040
If you like these, you'll like the set of Sonatas for Violin and
Harpsichord (with Dantone on the harpsichord), as well as the Mullova/Il
Giardino Armonico Vivaldi disc, both on Onyx.
In related news, I was surprised to learn from the Onyx website that Pieter
Wispelwey has left Channel Classics for Onyx. I wonder why. (It's too bad
that there will be no more Wispelwey SACDs.)

I haven't heard Mullova's sonatas & partitas (I turn to Milstein for
those), but I very much like Mullova's Bach violin concerti; would not
be averse to procuring more Mullova /Bach recordings.
Hi Leonid,
I would expect it to be pretty similar to her playing of half of these
at Mills College a year or so back -- I posted something vague but
enthusiastic about that here not long ago. A magnificent recital.

Thanks for the report and links, Matty, as well as to others who
responded with such a quick enthusiasm. The samples are certainly
encouraging. Interestingly, the youtube piece, at least as heard through a
laptop, does not sound to me at all like someone who would play with Il
Giardino Armonico. Probably my notion of the latter ensemble is outdated?

The YouTube video is an excerpt from an ArtHaus Musik DVD: "Live
Concert From The Church Of St. Nicolai, Leipzig" 100039. The concert
took place in 1989.

Her BWV 1005 sounds pretty sour at some parts... Good interpretation
overall, but I think I'll stick with Hilary Hahn's recordings where
there's overlap between the two.
