Yes; fascinated and grateful. I see, though, that you omitted Shura
Gehrman's English version; I can't imagine why that would have slipped
your mind....

Gee, I'm going to look for this too. Hynninen is my favorite singer. I
thought I knew everything he ever recorded.

Much better than you have any right to expect. Perhaps the best bass
recording (after Hotter/Werba) and way ahead of Moll or Talvela.

Yes, it is one of my favorites (I don't know *that* many). The
"Hurdy-Gurdy Man" is, BTW, somber and depressing. Where else 2 minutes of
music express so much?
SG
A special is it with Fischer-Dieskau. There a more than 30 recordings only by
this great baritone.

Also on a DGG "twofer", along with some Schubert and some classic Loewe
ballads. Not available in the USA, but I found a copy via
www.musicexpress.com.

Aha! I saw this listed once on a new release sheet, and assumed that it had
to be a misprint. Any ideas for a source for this CD? I've never seen it in
the USA.

Hi!
Ohmygosh! I am *green with envy* being a *freakish collector*. (better addicted
to Winterreise than to drugs or gambling though). Is there any hope that I can
persuade you to arrange some tape swapping with me? I have *lots* of other music
of course, vocal as well as instrumental, historical as well as contemporary.
These versions you mention seem to be radio recordings mostly and as such totally
unavailable. It makes my heart beat faster ....
Best regards, Philip
I've never seen the CD in a regular shop, and bought it second store in
Amsterdam. The label is called "TELE yhdistamme" , which seems Finnish to
me. However, in small print we can read also the name Naxos, although it
looks quite different from all the other Naxos-CD's. On the cover can be
read: "Ei jalleenmyyntiin" and "Ej till forsaljning", which means "Not for
resale", as you undoubtedly know. The year of release is 1996. The German
text of the sonmgs is printed in the booklet, with a translation in Finnish.
So I know now that Der Leiermann is in Helsinki known as
"Posetiivinsoittaja" (might come in handy).

But here are some I never would want to be without (and I'll try to make it a
short list):
Anders/Weissenborn
Dermota/Dermota (their first time around, 1963)
Dieskau/Demus (but the Dieskau/Moore of 1963 comes close)
Holl/Grubert
Hotter/Moore
Huesch/Mueller
Lehmann/Ulanovsky
Ludwig/Werba (not a commercial recording)
Patzak/Demus
Pears/Britten
Prey/Bianconi
Quasthoff/Spencer
Schey/De Nobel
Schreier/Richter
Souzay/Baldwin (1958)
Tauber/Spolinasky (only half the cycle but still...)
It's a long list after all. I can't choose really. If I were to take *one*
recording with me to the notorious desert island it would probably be
Schey's.
Philip
It's a good list, but for me omits a central recording -- the 1980 recording by
Jorma Hynninen and Rolf Gothoni (on Fuga LPs). I find that a performance that
is deeply moving and beautifully sung. And Gothoni's piano playing is a major
contributor as well.

Interesting list. Until a few months ago, I was collecting WINTERREISE
recordings as avidly as Philip; these are the ones that I'd
keep if I were forced to pare the collection to the bone:
Fassbaender/Reimann (EMI)
Anders/Raucheisen (DGG)
Hagegard/Schuback (RCA)
Pears/Britten (Decca)
Pregardien/Staier (Teldec)
Greindl/Klust (DGG)
Schmitt-Walter/Leitner (Preiser)
Quasthoff/Spencer (RCA)
Huesch/Mueller (Preiser)
Schmidt/Jansen (DGG)
Van Dam/Baldwin (Forlane)
Schreier/Richter (Philips)
Hotter/Raucheisen (DGG)
Gmyrya/Ostrin (Melodiya LP)
Hynninen/Gothoni (the first one on Fuga LP, from around 1980)

I'd probably pick Pregardien. Today, at least...

It's a real pity that the only Hynninen version currently available is the
Ondine recording from about a decade later. For some reason, it's much
inferior to the earlier version.
BTW, earlier in the thread, I found out that another Hynninen recording of
the cycle will be released shortly, on Naxos. Unfortunately, it seems that
it will not be distributed anywhere but in Finland.
Henry, I remember reading a rave review in Fanfare shortly after the release
of the Fuga recording. Did you write it?
I'm waiting for the Bocelli. Lots better than the Helmut Lotti.
And Dawn Upshaw's stage pantomime (she actually manages a somersault
followed by a split during Der Leiermann) is not to be believed.
Lesley Garrett, where are you?
Alrod
Guilty as charged.

You're quite right and certainly Hynninen's first recording is better than his
second effort (although there is not much difference inyterpretation-wise). There
*is* a third Hynninen on Naxos (1996) which I've never heard but hope to acquire
soon. I must say that I can make this list much longer.
Philip
If we're really lucky Bocelli and Dawn (without shoes, of course) will do
it together; worth waiting for the video.
Simon
You mean Michael Bolton hasn't gotten to it yet? Drat.

Assuming this is the same performance on Preiser CD (93067) the recording date
is given as March 1964.
