Why indeed.....
I find the Aeolian set very dull and uninspired.

I'm not Philip, but I find their series (what I've heard of it; I gave up
after a while) dull, cautiously (and not sufficiently accurately) played
and undercharacterized.

Not my favourites either but a lot better than the Aeolians IMO.

I have the Op.76 set by Kodaly, bought mainly on reading Penguin, and must
say that I also find them very prosaic. These works need a lot more
imagination, and zest, and is one of the reasons I haven't bought any
further Kodaly Haydn quartets.
Who is more likely to fill my requirements for these works? Maybe mix and
match I assume.

According to this recent book:

- Haydn's string quartets were not released as a cycle until 1976, when the Aeolian Quartet completed their collection.

The really sad thing is that the Schneider cycle was never completed. It set a standard, at least of musical understanding and sympathy with the composer, that stands the test of time. Even more, I think, than the aborted Pro Arte Quartet 78s, now available cheap and in first-rate transfers on Warner.

Interesting to read all the pontificating stuff from yesteryear. Even more interesting to read that one of their first violinists, Sydney Humphreys, was a Canadian, another was Emmanuel Hurwitz (any relation to Our Dave?) and that the cellist was Derek Simpson.

The cd box set did not include op.3 probably because of the controversy concerning it's authorship:
