Hello all,

Continuing my series of early chamber music recordings, here are three
violin sonatas, one abridged, played by that gramophonic pioneer,
Arthur Catterall. The earliest recording here is also, supposedly,
the first uncut recording of a sonata - Mozart's K. 526 in A major
(identified on the labels as "Opus 8, No. 1"), with Sir Hamilton Harty
at the piano. This was recorded April 27, 1923 (matrices: 76961/6,
all first takes), and issued on UK Columbia L 1494 through 1496 in
October, 1923, and in the US on 67139-D through 67141-D in Masterworks
Set No. 25. This is my second go-round for this recording; last
spring I posted a dubbing from cassettes, but now I have the original
UK discs back in my possession and have made a new transfer directly
from them.

Next is an abridged version of Beethoven's "Spring" Sonata (in F, Op.
24), with pianist William Murdoch. This is one of several sonatas
(others were the Beethoven "Kreutzer" and sonatas by Ireland and
Coleridge-Taylor, as well as sonata movements by Franck and Grieg)
which had originally been recorded by Albert Sammons (also with
Murdoch as pianist) but which were re-recorded in June 1923 by
Catterall (presumably because Sammons was contracted to Vocalion at
the time). This version of the "Spring" Sonata, which had been
originally recorded by Sammons around 1917 (and issued in November
1918 on L 1231 and 1232), was re-recorded by Catterall on June 6, 1923
(matrices: AX65/8, all first takes), and issued with the same
catalogue numbers. The Catterall version was also issued in the USA
on 67161/2-D. (I have the UK version.) Each movement occupies one
side, and each is cut except, of course, the Scherzo, which being
originally only a little over than a minute long, is actually
lengthened here, receiving two "da capos" instead of only one. Even
so, the side is one-half blank space.

Finally, the Franck Sonata in A, again with William Murdoch. This was
recorded on November 18, 1923, and April 11, 1924. This had a very
curious issue history. It was not issued in the UK, though three of
the movements (the third, fourth, and first, in that order) were
allocated L 1535/7, under which numbers Catterall's recording of the
Brahms Op. 108 was ultimately issued. These same three movements in
the same order were issued in the USA, 67136-D through 67138-D
(Masterworks Set No. 23) but hastily withdrawn when the errors of
incompleteness and movement order were discovered. The set was then
reissued, with all four movements and in the correct order, on 67164-D
through 67167-D (Masterworks Set No. 33). This version is presented
here. The matrix order shows why the incorrect ordering of the
movements occurred in the first place:

AX229-3 Apr. 11 '24 Third movement, pt. 1
AX230-1 Nov. 18 '23 Third movement, pt. 2
AX231-1 Nov. 18 '23 Fourth movement, pt. 1
AX232-1 Nov. 18 '23 Fourth movement, pt. 2
AX233-1 Nov. 18 '23 First movement, pt. 1
AX234-3 Apr. 11 '24 First movement, pt. 2
AX413-1 Apr. 11 '24 Second movement, pt. 1
AX414-1 Apr. 11 '24 Second movement, pt. 2

All three sonatas are included in one ZIP file.
