On DG's June schedule.

If I hear anything else I'll let you know.

Any info on the contents, i.e. number of CDs? I wonder whether this set will include his Decca opera recordings as well, now that DGG and Decca or part of the same group.

If it is just the DG Opera Recordings then will it include the Falstaff that was recorded by the DG team but issued with Philips logos/etc because of a concurrent Falstaff on DG from Giulini.

Presumably. My copy of that recording is on DG. If I had to venture a
guess about his Decca opera recordings I'd say they won't be included.
But I have no evidence either way at the moment.

Do you have any insights on the complete Furtwangler recordings on DG box that according to an earlier German report, had been on the release schedule of this year? Now they have missed the anniversary (of his death), do you know if the box is delayed or simply cancelled? Thanks.

I don't see anything on the schedule for the next few months. That
doesn't necessarily mean it doesn't exist. The MLP-3 box disappeared off
the schedule for a long time before turning up again.

I guess it will include the Falstaff, as it is included in the list of opera recordings made in the 80s that is printed in the booklet of the 1980s box set.

Although the Karajan Falstaff initially came out on Philips it was
later issued in DG.

Recently, both of his Aida's were on a list of recommended recordings:

- Mirella Freni, Jose Carreras, Vienna PO/Herbert von Karajan (EMI) [MC]
- Renata Tebaldi, Carlo Bergonzi, Vienna PO/Herbert von Karajan (Decca) [MG]
- Montserrat Caballe, Placido Domingo, New PO/Riccardo Muti (EMI) [RMo]

It doesn't surprise me that Karajan's Decca opera recordings are
included, but if they were willing to do that, why didn't they add
Karajan's Decca orchestral recordings to the other boxes?

Also, I was scratching my head about the Orfeo ed Euridice recording,
having forgotten that came out on CD in a series featuring performances
from the Salzburg Festival. Incidentally, that same recording is on
Opera d'Oro.

Thanks for the link.

Good question. Perhaps because they were already issued in a smaller box
(http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00114LF4E) a few years ago? However, that
has rarely prevented yet another repackaging and reissuing of
recordings. Perhaps we can expect the recordings in that box to be
reissued in original jacket format soon.

By my counting, there are several non-studio recordings included from
the Salzburg Festival in addition to the Orfeo ed Euridice. The listing
at jpc.de shows two Rosenkavalier recordings. I assume one is the
digital studio recording. The other one might be this:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000026C3F/). There is also a Trovatore
(probably this one: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0000012WQ/) and a Don
Carlo (probably this one: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0000012WP/).

Finally, there is another Haydn Creation. We already had one recording
of that in the 1960s box and another in the 1980s box. I suppose it
must be this one: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0001NDIPU/ .

I'm glad UMG decided to include the Decca operas as well as the DG ones,
but I don't know what to make of their coverage of Karajan's live opera
recordings. Great to have some of them from Salzburg included, but UMG
omitted several live from the Vienna State Opera that they have issued
on CD before. For example: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000007N5C/,
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000007N5A/,
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000007N59/, and
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000007N5B/.

Also, I see no mention of libretti and translations on the jpc.de
website. It would be a shame if none are included, though I think I
already have at least one recording with libretto of most of the works
in the box.

That is absolutely bizarre! So this box ought to be advertised as
"Karajan's complete opera recordings for Decca (and most for DG)". Along
these lines, I was really disappointed that the deluxe Pavarotti box did
not include his early Ballo in Maschera recording with Tebaldi and
Milnes, conducted, I believe, by Bartoletti. Granted, it had already
been issued cheaply in both the Grand Opera series and on a two-fer
(with only a synopsis), but if you want to recognize a celebrated
artist's work, and respect the fans who value that artist's work, why
not take a little extra time, spend a little extra money, and do it right?

I understand that that Pavarotti box included texts and translations,
but I wouldn't expect the Karajan box to (at least in printed form),
which is why I have no intention of jettisoning my individual issues of
these works which do include libretti. I am prepared to be surprised,
however: the box has fewer discs than the orchestral boxes do, and that
may allow enough room inside for a booklet or booklets of texts.
