I hadn't seen this mentioned, and thought there might be some folks
here who would be interested...
In their June new release listing, MDT is showing a disc by the
Quatuor Turner of Beethoven quartets, Opp. 59/3 and 74. Still on
Harmonia Mundi, but full price this time, so apparently not part of
the Nouveaux Interpretes series. Hopefully, they'll get to record
more of them.
Tangentially -- has anybody ever seen the Carmina Quartet LvB disc
that was pictured in a Fanfare ad about a year ago?
cheers,
--Andrew
Thanks for the tip! I loved their op. 18 set. But I'm a little surprised
the two works you mention are the only ones on the CD; I'd think there would
be room for at least one more quartet.

No, but it sounds interesting - what's on it?

Does anyone know whether Denon is distributed anywhere outside Japan? As
far as I can tell it's no longer distributed in the U.S. and hasn't been
distributed in the UK for years.

1) The Denon website appears to deal only with their electronics
equipment. All the search engine results I found referring to Denon
Records pages within the Denon website returned a "File not found."
2) The Fanfare ad I mentioned before says that Denon is distributed in
the US by Atlantic (as in WEA/Time Warner). Has that gone by the
boards?
3) Coincidentally enough, there is an ad in the June Gramophone from
MP Classical saying that they now offer the whole Denon catalog, and
listing 30 or so titles (but not the Carmina LvB). I've emailed them
about it, and will report back.
4) The Carmina Quartet's own website (www.carmina-quartet.ch) would
appear to have the disc available to order. I say "appear" because
it's all in German :-).
(any assistance would be appreciated).
And while I'm thinking about it -- a while back, someone posted
mentioning the possibility/rumor that the Petersen Quartet had
disbanded. According to their management company website, they have
tours booked for the US for November 2001 and March 2002 -- and in the
potential programs for those concerts, they list LvB Op. 18/3 and 127,
so hopefully those will comprise their next Beethoven disc. (If so,
that would finish off the late quartets, and leave 18/5 and the middle
qts.)
And lastly, speaking of poorly distributed Japanese labels -- does
anybody know where I can find any of the Musikverein Qt. LvB discs on
Platz? I have 3 of them (inlcuding the one that was at Berkshire
recently), and assume there's six more. Seen any new/used ones
sitting in shops anywhere?

All I can do is say that your assumption is correct; there are
nine discs in all (though I think they would have fitted on
fewer). I haven't seen one in a store in ages, new or used.
While on the subject, does anyone know if they recorded the other
half of Haydn op. 76?

Thanks! - this was very helpful.

Yes, the website does let you order Carmina Quartet CDs. They bill
you when they send the CDs. If you really do need help with the
German:
Price per CD = 30 Swiss Francs
Fill in:
- The number of copies you want of the CDs (where it says "Anzahl")
- Lieferadresse = shipping address
(Vorname = first name, Strasse = street, PLZ = zip/postal code)
- Rechnungsaddresse = billing address (if different from shipping)
Then hit Bestellen, for "order."
It doesn't say about shipping costs for outside Switzerland, but I'm
guessing they won't be like the ones from some German mail order
places (i.e. ridiculous).
Anyway, I'm planning to try this; I also want their
Szymanowski/Webern CD (which is excellent, I've heard some of it
thanks to a friend) and possibly the Haydn.

However, the Szymanowski and Haydn can be obtained in far less contrived
ways... e.g. at Amazon. :)
