I got into serious comparison of versions awhile ago. My clear favorite of
these is Brendel-Crochet. I'm not sure if/how it can be had on CD. My copy is
an old turnabout (think Vox) CD. I rarely listen to other Brendel recordings I
own, but this performance has stuck. I'm not sure you can go terribly wrong
with any of these (though Schnabel is mono), but Brendel-Crochet seemed to give
the piece an extra measure of excitement.

It's in a three disc Vox Box that was issued a year or two ago; it also
contains the impromptus, moments musicaux, the Wanderer Fantasy and
Liszt's trashy orchestration of same, etc. I don't find it particularly
exciting; what appeals to me about it is the remarkably veiled, hushed
quality conveyed at the start, partly a result of the (frankly not very
good) recording. I recently did a purge of recordings of this music and
ended up with Eschenbach/Franz on an EMI twofer (probably my first
choice), Pires/Sermet on Erato, and a very cheap disc by the Cologne Piano
Duo on Arte Nova (I forget what I ditched; I gave up on Perahia/Lupu
years ago; I find it utterly spineless in the turbulent passages). (Among
HIP performances I was underwhelmed by Bilson/Levin on Archiv and probably
prefer Jordans/Doeselaar on Globe.)

So you probably find the Lupu/Perahia a little too quiet? It's one
of my desert island discs though.
I returned the one with Badura-Skoda/Demus because they reminded me
so much of a military rendition, just so step step step...
Haven't heard the Brendel-Crochet though.
I heard the Perahia-Lupu one while driving and had to pull aside to
just listen. I found it quietly gripping. I think their pace tends
to be a little slower than many in the first movement.

Have music, will travel: piano, harpsichord, recorders
With regard to the Fantasie,
I just listened again to an interesting, if badly recorded, performance on
a <<Historical Performers>> label cd (fatto in Italia) that I bought about
five years ago and never saw on the shelves again. It is a recording of a
live 1964 performance by Richter and Benjamin Britten.
No details about the
performance are available (I'd sure like to know more about it, if anyone
has any info), but apparently it was part of a concert that included
the Grand
Duo in C Major and the Variations in A-flat, both of which are also on
this cd.
It seems to have been transferred from a scratchy lp. I picture
someone trying to cut a bootleg LP at the concert. :-)

This is available on an inexpensive 3-CD Vox set (CD3X 3041) that
contains Brendel's first recordings of the Impromptus, Moments Musicaux,
Wanderer Fantasy and additional piano four-hands music. A really
delightful set.

The other Brendel performance I like from the same period is a D958
that's second only to Richter.

It's official: he's getting soft! The recommendation of Kempff was an
early sign, but this confirms our suspicions. Watch out for Dan's
glowing endorsement of Claudio Arrau.

No, I'm not getting soft. I've been recommending the same
performances for years. As I made it clear many times, I
hold no personal bias against any artist and I judge every
performance strictly on its own merits. That Brendel turned
out two or three good performances does change the fact that
most everything else he recorded is as dry and insipid as
chalk.

OK, but no better than the two above.

Perahia & Lupu are good. While Perahia's Mozart is worse than
soporific, his Schubert is excellent, both live and on disc.

Bilson & Levin are tops - just incredibly beautiful. I heard them live
shortly before they recorded the Fantasy, and it was a concert not
easily forgotten. Very, very highly recommended.

For me: the duo Cromelynk (spelling??) on Claves is the best, but I
would like to hear Richter and Britten...
