I havent purchased a mahler cd in ages, but has
Anyone heard this set yet? Its been floating around ebay and given the
really sensational NYPO mahler 5 released awhile back, the american
orchestras [4-BSO, 6-NYPO , 7- CO] in this set seem really tempting.

It's definitely worth it. There's also the Mahler 1 & 2 on the same
label. The 2nd is definitely a keeper. One of Tennstedt's best.

Anything interesting with the Minnesota Orchestra? I already have that
orchestra's own big box with a fine Beethoven "Pastoral," of course.

There is a Beethoven 9th with the MO on Memories. Did you get that?

No, in part out of embarrassment; some friends of mine sang in it, and told
me afterwards that it had been their greatest musical experience ever. And I
neither sang in it, nor attended. I haven't the foggiest recollection of
what I was doing instead that week.

This has come up a couple of times in the newsgroup and you might find
some responses by typing "Tennstedt Cleveland Mahler" or other searches
into the archive on Google.

The bottom line is, if you're tempted, get it, because that probably
means you especially enjoy American orchestras and this is one way to
get them with Tennstedt, who did some inspired work with them.

However, don't expect spectacular sound. Tennstedt's live legacy is
perhaps better served by getting the Chicago 1 on EMI, the live 5 with
the NYPO, the 6 and 7 live on EMI with the LPO (not to be confused with
the studio recordings with the same orchestra). These are all superb
performances--very intense and gritty, with more of a grip on the
inexorable progress of the music than the studio recordings (IMHO) and
yet have excellent sound.

On the other hand, I really liked the Cleveland 7--it would be hard to
live without that, even though the LPO performance is similar and
basically as good. The BSO 4 is a special treat for those of us who
love that orchestra (I remember it getting more and more lovely as it
moves along), and I have not heard the Tennstedt 4th that's on
Hannsler/Profil. Perhaps that's another reason to get the Memories set,
but again, there's no overwhelming reason to have the set unless you're
already head over heels dedicated to Tennstedt, Mahler, or American
orchestras, which obviously don't make many recordings (but in this
case have recorded the works in question anyway with other conductors).

It's been a while since I heard the live LPO 3rd, but my impression
then was that this wasn't Tennstedt's finest hour in Mahler, but it had
some interesting moments worth the time spent, anyway. Perhaps I need
to give it a fresh listen.

All in all, essential and not essential, depending on your preferences.

Is the Chicago M1 on EMI the same performance as that featured on the
recent EMI DVD with the M1 (Chicago) and M8?

I don't know the answer to that. I was told by someone--now I don't
remember who--that there are differences, even though I assume they
were produced from the same set of performances. Undoubtedly Gary S. or
Don T. would know the real answer.

? I know of (and have) a live Fifth with the LPO (issued on EMI); is
this a different one from a NYPO box? I certainly agree with your
characterization.

No...all the 5ths are by Mahler :-)

The one in the NYPO Mahler box is with the NYPO, not
surprisingly--available only from that orchestra. The two on EMI are
both with the LPO--a live performance, and a studio performance issued
earlier. The studio one was issued on LP first and then on CD and I
believe that's the one you get in the Tennstedt EMI Mahler box now.

The 5th on Memories is with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, so
there's another potential reason for getting the Memories discs, I
suppose, separate from the reasons I discussed. Sadly, I have not yet
listened to that performance, even though I do have it in the Memories
set. Shame on me.
