Which is a rip-off. Which is cheaper, a new CD at 18.99 or
7.99 for mp3s? The CD is a better value.
I just read in the latest 2001-catalogue that the reasons for the special
prices is the 40th anniversary of that label. 2001 offers dozens of ECM CDs,
Jazz for Euro 7.99, classical for Euro 8.99 each.

$11 cheaper to be exact.

But cheaper is not always better. I could never do the mp3 only thing
because I find that after listening to mp3s for a few days straight on
my mp3 player it is like a breathe of fresh air when I play a CD on my
decent home system. There is no comparison. Also, playing an mp3 over my
home system reveals just how bad even high bitrate mp3s sound.
I'll spend more on CDs even if that means I will end up with less music.
Even at 256k? I've never been able to tell the difference at this
bitrate, but I'd be interested to know whether others can.
Yes, I can tell the difference. MP3s always sound "dull" to me compared
to CD. That said, I do rip my CDs into MP3 at 320K for use in my
portable and I do find them to be enjoyable for background music but
when I really want to seriously listen to music it's CD or nothing.
That's what I like about the CD format. I can have it both ways.
The question becomes even more pertinent when you realize that many of these
discs can be bought via amazon sellers for less than $11.00; leaving aside ECM,
it's often the case that the difference in price between the mp3s and the CD at
amazon is close enough to zero to make no difference.

I rip my music into flac and usually avoid any mp3 at all, even at
320K. Can you hear a difference between a CD burned from 320K mp3 and
flac ?
George
Absolutely! In fact I recently experimented with this exact thing as my
mp3 player[Sansa Fuze] will play both mp3 and flac. So I ripped a few
CDs as flac and loaded them on to the player along with my other 320k
mp3s. I was amazed at the difference. The flac's sounded so much more
"relaxed" than the mp3. The flac sparkled while the mp3 sounded dull.
And this was all with less than expensive earphones[Sennheiser 300CX].
It made me think about side-stepping mp3 altogether and just going with
flac. The only problem is one of space. Flacs are still quite large
compared with 320k mp3s. I've expanded my Sansa to 12gb but that is
still very small and I can fit so many more mp3's on compared to flacs.
Since I mainly use the mp3 player when I'm walking I decided to go with
mp3 because fidelity is not as important then.
I agree. Many times it makes more sense to spend the extra couple of
dollars for the CD.
Thanks, it just confirms what I have been doing.
In my case I keep my music on the server, so space is not a concern.

Why they don't release them as FLACs priced somewhere between the two I
fail to understand...

Because iPods won't play FLACs?
Dave Cook
Not being an 'iPodist', I will ask: Is this because FLAC is 'open source'?

I get a lot of FLAC files. I simply transcode them to Apple Lossless.
Steve
Apple already has their own lossless format (ALAC) and in the grand
scheme of things, interest in FLAC on the iPod is probably extremely
small.
