Hi,
What is the best recorded version on CD of Mozart's Requiem?
I'd be interested in people's opinions regarding
the interpretation, the performances, the recording quality, etc.
I'd also welcome any pointers to reliable reviews of classical music CDs in
general.
Thanks!
DVT

What's best for you depends on your taste; it would help if you told us
what sort of performances you like in music of this period: large scale
modern instruments, small scale modern instruments, period instruments,
etc. It also makes a difference if there's a particular edition you
prefer. Not knowing your preference, I'll assume you want the standard
Sussmayr edition and recommend Davis/RCA for large scale modern and
Savall/Astree (my favorite recording of the piece) or Koopman/Erato for a
period instrument recording.

For a period instrument performance, I'd recommend the recording
conducted by John Eliot Gardiner on Philips 4201972 (if it's still
available). The soloists include Barbara Bonney and Anne Sofie von
Otter - a hard-to-beat combination in this music.

Solti did a very good video / CD recording live in St. Sebastian's in
Vienna, on Dec 5 1991 with the VPO. An excellent performance, even more
telling on the video.
I would also recommend the following
1, Schreier (Philips, incl. in the monumental complete Mozart box set)
2, Marriner (Philips later digital one with Robert Lloyd, but they
chose Schreier in preference, so there you go)
That's about it for me, I only like the standard Sussmayr completion,
and something that sounds like modern instruments (Gardiner comes very
close)
There is a new Abbado on DG, expensive starry live in Berlin. Try it, I
haven't yet.

I've always liked the old Davis performance (not to be confused with the newer
RCA version). It's recently been reissued on Penquin Classics, but the Phillips
2fer is better. Also, an excellent version which no-one else seems to have
heard is the Hickox performance on Virgin, recently reissued at budget price
along with the Bruckner Requiem. Hickox uses a smaller orchestra, but the
instruments are modern.

To my surprise, Savall's recording is not bad. It has the most exciting
"Confutatis" I've heard and is well held together (unlike the recording
by Boston Baroque in which the Confutatis is a tad faster, but they lose
it at the end). However, Savall's accompanying Masonic Funeral Music is
devoid of any solemnity and the somber nature of the piece is totally
lost.

For a very intense recording of the Requiem in modern instruments, I'd
recommend Fricsay/RIAS as top choice, but this recording is embedded in
an 11-disc set devoted to Fricsay (the single disc is very hard to
find).

I do like that "intimate" Hickox version on Virgin with Yvonne Kenny.
It's rather short at 40-somethin' minutes. Good digital sound.
My favorite though, is the remastered 1958 Scherchen on MCA Millennium
Classics.
