Is anyone familiar with music for guitar and clarinet? I haven't come
up with any via internet searches. Plenty for flute or oboe and
guitar, but no clarinet. Weird...
Thanks,
John

IIRC there is one by Giuliani, and it is excellent. DaveA

"Mist Over the Lake" published by Editions Orphee.

Johann Gaitzsch publishes several pieces for clarinet and guitar under his
own Philomele Editions. Theodore Front is his US distributor:
http://www.tfront.com
click on "Music" under "Advanced Search" on the left, then enter
"Philomele" in the Publisher field to see the catalogue. There are other
Philomele pieces not listed in the Front catalogue, though, so you may
need to contact Johann directly.

If you have a flutist as well, there are some nice trios for flute,
clarinet, and guitar. Many of these are also playable with
flute/viola/guitar. Kreutzer's op. 16 is one of the better known, and
quite nice.

There are some 19th Century pieces by Ivan Muller, and a CD of guitar
& clarinet music on a German CD label (Musik Dabringhaus und Grim).
I'll try to find a copy of that, and send more info. Sergio Assad did
a CD with an Italian clarinetist, last name Mirabassi, I believe. I
think that CD was arrangements mostly, but also had a very nice piece
written by Sergio's daughter, Clarice, who is also a very fine
composer.

Two that have not been mentioned yet:

Windows by Peter Schickele. Nominally for guitar and Viola, but does

Two Old Melodies by Andrei Petrov. (nominally for flute and guitar,
but like the Freidlin Mist, includes a part for clarinet).

He wrote for guitar... cool! This score is available from Presser:

Windows: Three Pieces for Viola (or Flute or Clarinet) and Guitar (1966)
-- 7' Published: #164-00188

do you know if he wrote this for any particular guitarist in mind?

That I do not know. He may have written for a particular _viola_
player who had a guitarist significant other....

I was just trying to find my copy of this, but in this mess...(-: I
used to play it with a flutist way back when. Like he is fond of
saying (On his Schickele Mix broadcast) it don't mean a thing if it
ain't got that special je ne sai quoi...

and, if it sounds good, it is good...

I'll have to order this and have my wife try it on recorder... thanks
for the recommendation!

If you're looking for newer pieces, you should also check out
http://www.guitarplus.org/clarinet_guitar_rep.html

The 19th century repertoire can be quite enjoyable as well, though. I
forgot to mention Heinrich Neumann in my first reply. A couple of his
duets are published by Berben, and Philomele also has some. Not my
favorite, but certainly playable and musical. Luigi Magistrelli has
recorded several of these, and he has also edited a few for a small
Italian publisher:
http://www.edizionieufonia.it/Musica%20da%20Camera.htm

Much of the fulte/guitar repertoire is accessible for clarinet/guitar,
either with a clarinet in C or by transposing the flute part. The range
can become an issue with the more challenging flute parts, so a lot will
depend on the skill of your clarinettist in the upper registers of the
instrument.

So is much of the viola repertoire. There is a way to read viola parts
on the clarinet but I forgot what it was. I am sure our resident
clarinetist Dr. Arthur J. Ness could elabortae on this...:-)

Add two sharps and read the part in bass clef.

I have tried something similar for reading viola parts on the
guitar--tuning the guitar up one half step. But that requires a whole
bunch of sharps and/or flats to get the intervals right. Not the most
elegant solution. Then again, it's pretty rare that I'm asked to play a
viola part.

The mind reals with potential viola jokes.

There is a way to read viola parts on the clarinet...
...Now if there was only a way to read them on the viola.

If memory serves me correctly, the Giuliani is Op. 127, which Klocker
plays on a clarinet in C. I believe it was originally for guitar and
flute or violin.

The Neumann pieces were originally for clarinet and guitar. I'm not sure
about the others. You might try contacting Johann Gaitzsch, as he has
edited several works for clarinet and guitar. He would have more
information on Neumann as well.

By the way, the Donizetti Serenade is actually Neumann's op. 5 serenade,
which is available from Berben.
