Hi,
I have just bought a Yamaha classical second-hand but have not found
the model mentioned in any web page or newsgroup.
It is a Tiwan manufactured Yamaha G-245S solid top(spruce) & rosewood
back and sides and looks like Jose Ramirez copy. Anyone know the
history of this model and approx. value.
Thanks
D C

Try the Yamaha guitars web site at www.yamahaguitars.com
They have an archive that may contain this guitar and its retail price.
The whole site uses Shockwave or some other such hypermedia nonsense, so
a web search may not turn up anything from this site. Anyway, if you
have no luck there, try to find the Acoustic Guitar Blue Book at a local
bookstore. They do list some production classicals such as Yamaha.
Good luck!

Good advice, Sean. The model in question and its original MSRP was
listed there as you suggested it might be. That should make the inquirer
happy. I too have a Yamaha among my guitars (GC-40 Grand Concert)and had
been curious as to its original value. I was pleased to discover a price
at the Yamaha website for this model as well. It is an interesting
instrument - built very solidly with a very hard finish. It is unusually
heavy compared to say, my Oribe, or for that matter any of other
guitars, but it makes an excellent workhorse for every day practice,
etc. I would like to be able to get more volume from it, however. It
truly pales in this respect beside the Oribe - and, for that matter,
most of my other instruments. Any ideas for pumping up the "output"?

Tks.

I have a Hirade H8 that is also heavier than other guitars and seems to
lack volume. I think that the Japanese guitars are in general not as
loud as others I have tried ( there are exceptions to this, notably
Kohno). The tops tend to be a bit thicker, which may account for the
lack of volume. But like you mentioned, they make excellent workhorse
gig guitars for those situations where you just don't want to stress
about your concert instrument. I think the workmanship on the Hirade is
as good as I have seen on any instrument--truly impeccable. I actually
got a little more volume from the Hirade by using lighter tension
strings. Specifically, I use the GHS Vanguard classicals. I posted
something about these recently, so you can look up that article or
e-mail me if you're interested in my impressions.

I have a Yamaha G-250S. Yamaha's archive doesn't list anything before 1979.
On their home page there's a link to serial numbers so I've dated mine to
1978. I tried contacting them by e-mail for some history and info but that
was MONTHS ago and still no response. If you find another site with some
info, I'd appreciate hearing about it.

I had actually been to this site before but failed to see the path to
the archive but thanks for sending me back again. After a few wrong
clicks I eventually found the accoustic archive.
