Hello, all...

Has anybody heard (or heard of) a classical guitar made by Taurus? It was
made in Spain circa 1971. Love to hear any and all opinions.

Thanks,
Rog

In his 1994 list of instruments Richard Brune, a well known luthier in the
Chicago area who also sells on commission guitars, had 2 Taurus guitars
for sell. One was a Model 56 made in 1968 in Barcelona for sell for
$1800. He wrote that "compared to new instruments currently on the
general marketplace, these older Taurus instruments are a much better
value". He also had another Model 56 built in 1980 which had been made by
Antonio Grau who had made the student model Ramirez guitars for many
years. This one was for sell for $2000. Both had solid cedar tops, solid
Indian sides, black ebony fretboards and were 650 mm scale.

I've got one, though I don't know that much about it. I got it for
$300 about 15 years ago. Odd looking woods with a spotted pfurling.
It has a kind of light and hollow but very pleasant sound. It was my
main classical through at least part of college, till I bit the bullet
and got a Ramirez 1a. It's not loud enough for chamber music but I
still like its tone for preclassical material.

Hello,
I have a 1973 model 45 Taurus made in the Paseo del Monte lutherie in Barcelona for Casa Maxi, Leganitos 12, Madrid where I bought it in the same year. It has held up remarkably well, enduring many trials including a trip to Greece in the same year to join the revolution which occurred in November. These guitars are extraordinary for their durable construction and deep, mature tone and outstanding harmonic sustain. I use Savarez strings on mine and the medium or high tension strings work well. These guitars are so well made they do not require a truss rod and only require a slight rub with a cloth barely wet with Tung oil on the finger board. If you are a player do NOT part with this guitar; you will regret it.
