Fretboard taper

I've often wondered why the fretboard is always narrower at the head end.
Why not parallel all the way along?

Because it extends the physical range up and down the neck where it
is possible to play. Having the strings relatively closer at the nut
lessens the stretch. Having them reletively farther apart on the short
frets permits more squeeze. daveA
